Joe Morgan, who saw action in parts of four MLB seasons before spending four seasons as the manager of the Boston Red Sox, died. He was 95.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer and former manager Joe Morgan,” the Red Sox announced in a statement Sunday. “He was a truly beloved fixture of the Red Sox, spending nearly two decades with the organization. We send our love to the Morgan family.”

Morgan played for the Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City A’s, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals from 1959-64. He batted .193 in 88 games, hitting two home runs.

A native of Walpole, Mass., Morgan gained more fame after retiring as a player for his association with the Red Sox.

Morgan managed the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston’s top farm team, from 1974-82. He was on the major league coaching staff from 1985 until the 1988 All-Star break, when he took over for John McNamara as the team’s interim manager.

The team immediately went on a winning streak, which included a string of 20 consecutive victories at Fenway Park. The team’s turnaround was dubbed “Morgan’s Magic,” and the Red Sox won the American League East.

After the Red Sox lost to the Oakland A’s in the AL Championship series, the interim tag was removed from his title and he became manager of the Red Sox.

The Red Sox won the AL East again in 1990, only to lose to the A’s again in the ALCS. He was fired as manager after the 1991 season, but remained close to the organization and made occasional visits to Fenway Park.

Morgan threw out the first pitch before the game of July 30, 2013, which celebrated the 25th anniversary of “Morgan’s Magic.” Asked at the game how he would fare if he managed today, he said, “I’d be dynamite. What else would you expect?”

Morgan and his wife, Dottie, had four children (Catherine, Joseph Jr., William, and Barbara Jean) and six grandchildren.
