BOSTON, MASS. (WJAR) — Joe Morgan, a Massachusetts native who played Major League baseball from 1959 though 1964 before becoming a coach and team manager, has died.
Morgan stayed active after his playing days ended, with coaching and managerial roles with various teams, including a stint as manager of the Boston Red Sox, 1988-91. During that time he led the team to two AL East titles.
Previously Morgan managed the Pawtucket Red Sox, 1974-82 – longer than any other PawSox skipper. His tenure included the longest professional basebal; game, the 33-inning game against the Rochester Red Wings in Pawtucket.
A statement on the Boston Red Sox Facebook page said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Red Sox Hall of Famer and former manager Joe Morgan. He was a truly beloved fixture of the Red Sox, spending nearly two decades with the organization.”
