ABINGDON, Va. (WCYB) — At Falcon Park in Abingdon on Wednesday night, you could not ask for a more dramatic finish.

And that dramatic finish was the piece of the pie to send Falcons baseball back to the VHSL Class 3 state quarterfinals.

With a tie game in the bottom of the 7th inning, it was fitting that four-year starter and William & Mary commit, Jett Humphrey, stepped into the box. On the second pitch he saw, the Falcon senior launched one over the right field wall for a walk-off two-run home run.

That’s just baseball for you. These things happen and just to be the one who did it is amazing,” said Humphreys. “I always love to get those opportunities and when I do I just try to be my best and leave it all out there. It’s a great environment to have and I wouldn’t want anything else in the world.Jett came through for his ninth home run of the year. He’s big time for us,” said head coach, Mark Francisco. “He’s been a four-year starter and that was the biggest hit he’s had in his high school career. Couldn’t be more proud. He does everything right and he’s earned his success.

It was Humphreys who took the mound for the Falcons, as well. Despite not having his best night on the bump, the senior hung in there and kept a tight game rolling – where the Falcons entered the bottom half of the fifth inning down just one in a tight 2-1 ballgame.

After the Falcons took the lead in the fifth and added on one more in the sixth, Francisco handed the ball over to Hayden Reed to close the door. But like playoff baseball likes to do, things got interesting when Magna Vista tied the game up at 4. Still, Reed settled in and got the final out – giving Abingdon a chance to win it in a tie game in the bottom half.

After Elijah Parks started the inning with a lead-off single, it left it up to Humphreys to be the hero – sending the Falcons back to the state tournament with the hopes of another run to a state title.

Hats off to Magna Vista, they’re a great team. They were able to tie it up there, but I felt like if we got out of that inning tied we’d have a pretty good chance,” added Francisco. “Last year we came up a game short of getting back to the state tournament. I felt like we left something on the table, so just really proud of our kids to find a way to get it done.

The Falcons will now play for the Region 3D title on Friday with a chance to clinch a home state quarterfinal game next week.
