MLB Best Bets Today: Player Props for Monday, September 14

Monday’s MLB slate gives bettors several different ways to attack the player-prop market, from a sizable plus-money home run wager to a pair of more conventional strikeout and total-bases plays. 

We’re swinging for the fences with a red-hot slugger at Wrigley Field, backing the strikeout upside of an elite hurler in an AL Central battle, while looking for a veteran third baseman to take advantage of baseball’s premier hitting environment at Coors Field.

Bregman and the Cubs open a three-game home series against Atlanta, with right-hander Reynaldo Lopez scheduled to oppose Chicago left-hander David Peterson. Bregman has supplied another legitimate power threat in the middle of the Cubs’ order this season, and the combination of his pull-side power and Wrigley Field gives him enough home-run upside to justify taking a shot at this price. The appeal here is ultimately the number: +514 implies a relatively low probability of a homer, so we don’t need Bregman to be in a perfect matchup for the wager to carry value. One mistake from Lopez or the Atlanta bullpen could be enough for Bregman to cash the biggest plus-money play on the card. 

Bregman has cooled off a bit lately, but he has been one of the best hitters for the Cubs in the second half of the season. He’s tied for homers over the last 30 days with nine, with only Pete Crow-Armstrong (14) and Rafael Devers (13) launching more, and has crushed 16 of his 25 homers since the All-Star break.

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Guardians

Williams gets the ball at Progressive Field as Cleveland hosts the White Sox in an important AL Central matchup that could have massive playoff implications. Chicago enters the game at 76-73, just ahead of the 76-74 Guardians, adding considerable importance to Williams’ start. His workload is one of the strongest arguments for the over: Williams has averaged 96.5 adjusted pitches per start this season, placing him in the 96th percentile, and he’s among the best strikeout artists in the majors. He recorded 11 strikeouts in his previous outing, and he’s been on a roll of late with eight double-digit punchouts in his 11 starts. 

Against a White Sox lineup that Williams has the stuff to overpower, the combination of strikeout ability and a substantial expected workload makes eight punchouts an attainable target. He owns a 15.2 K/9 since the All-Star break.

Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres

Machado and the Padres travel to Denver to begin a four-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field, immediately making his total-bases prop one of the more attractive hitting markets on the slate. Colorado is scheduled to start right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano, while Machado arrives after helping San Diego complete a sweep of San Francisco on Sunday. The Padres have won seven straight games entering the series, and Machado homered in Sunday’s 6-4 victory. 

Now, he moves into a venue that significantly enhances extra-base-hit potential, which is particularly valuable for a prop that can be cleared with a double. Machado’s combination of recent form, power and the Coors Field environment makes over 1.5 total bases a strong play, as he has cleared this mark in five of 10 games this month.
