The Mets lost a close game in extras last night after winning a very similar game the night before. That kind of a loss can sometimes demoralize a team and slow them down. The opposite happened for the Mets, who came out swinging and took the third game of the series against the Dodgers, taking it 6-1.
Griffin Canning was exceptional for the Mets this evening. Over six innings, he allowed three hits and one walk against seven strikeouts. He looked completely in control, keeping batters off balance. All three hits against him were singles, including one by Shohei Ohtani, and there were never two runners on base in the same inning for Canning. Looks like my bold prediction may be coming true after all.
The Mets’ offense got to Tony Gonsolin early. Francisco Lindor got the game started with a hit by pitch. Brandon Nimmo then reached on an error by Enrique Hernández, and then stole second, putting men on second and third with no outs. Juan Soto grounded out to score Lindor, putting the Mets up 1-0. One batter later, Pete Alonso hit a ball deep to right-center field, going over the wall and giving the Mets a three-run lead before the Dodgers came to bat.
Gonsolin went five innings, and did not allow much more after that first inning, allowing three hits in total, three walks, and three strikeouts. Anthony Banda and Lou Trivino pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings, keeping the Dodgers in the game after an early deficit.
José Castillo relieved Canning in the seventh, and his appearance started off rough. After inducing a ground ball out from Max Muncy, Andy Pages doubled, and Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch, putting two on with one out. However, Castillo doubled down, striking out Dalton Rushing and Hernández to end the inning.
Ryan Loutos entered his third game of the season and sixth career game in the eighth, and things escalated quickly for him. Nimmo was hit by a pitch, Soto walked, and then Alonso hit a 447 foot home run that stunned just about everyone on the field with its majesty. The Mets were now up 6-0, and the plan to have Edwin DÃaz pitch the eighth went away.
Castillo pitched a scoreless eighth, giving up a single to Ohtani, but taking care of business elsewhere and sending the game into the ninth.
Loutos pitched a scoreless top of the ninth, sending Ryne Stanek to the mound to close out the game. After striking out Max Muncy, Pages took Stanek deep to break up the shutout and put the Dodgers on the board. It was Stanek’s first home run allowed in 2025. But he settled in and retired Conforto and Rushing to put the game to bed.
The Mets have now won the season series with the Dodgers, clinching home field advantage in the playoffs against Los Angeles. David Peterson and Landon Knack duel for the Mets in a late-afternoon game in Chavez Ravine.
