The Phillies desperation dive for pitching landed on Jose Urquidy on Thursday, the journeyman righty plucked off waivers from the Chicago White Sox.
To make room on the 40-man roster, Caleb Killian was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Urquidy, 31, has made just 13 total appearances in the big leagues in the last three years. He spent 2025 with the Tigers, with a 7.71 ERA in two outings and time at Triple A, then had a productive stint in the Mexican League last winter.
This year, he posted an 8.53 ERA in five games for Pittsburgh, then a 4.37 ERA in six games for the White Sox before being designated for assignment on Sept. 15. He has a 2-2 record with one save and one start.
Urquidy has made 92 career appearances (71 startS) in the big leagues with a 4.08 ERA.
Urquidy, who was a member of the 2022 Astros World Series team, is ineligible for the postseason. But he’s a warm body to help the Phillies get through the last 10 days of the regular season. They are facing at least two games in which they don’t know who will start, having to turn to bullpen games with Jesus Luzardo having been placed on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder stiffness.
Urquidy could take part in a bullpen game as soon as Saturday in New York against the Mets, with a corresponding move required to get him on the active roster. Kyle Backhus had been recalled Wednesday when Luzardo was shelved.
Killian was acquired from San Francisco in the Luis Arraez deal. The hard-throwing righty had a 13.50 ERA in 3.1 innings over four outings with the Phillies before straining his oblique. He is back throwing as part of a rehab plan.
