Almost three weeks after being placed on the injured list for the third and final time this season because of his right hip, the Twins announced Byron Buxton underwent a successful arthroscopic surgery on Friday morning.
Dr. Christopher Larson performed a labral repair with decompression and a cam resection procedure on Buxton’s right hip and the Twins said he was resting comfortably Friday night. When talking about the surgery a week ago, Buxton expressed optimism that he would be ready to go for the 2027 season.
Buxton’s hip issue stem back years, but this season, it first started forcing him off the field in May. After a brief break, he was able to play through it — and at an all-star level — but eventually he landed on the injured list in July. Between the three stints on the injured list, Buxton played in just 18 games after the all-star break, the last coming on Aug. 25 when he aggravated the hip trying to bend down to field a ball in the outfield.
“I had those good days and bad days,” Buxton said last week. “I had a stretch where I’d go 4-for-8 and go, ‘I’m about to turn the page.’ Then, the next four days I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be able to turn the bat this at-bat.’ I just took it day by day. We tried to manage it as best we could, keep the inflammation down. Honestly, I don’t know what else we could have done to prevent it from getting where it’s at. We did the shot. Gave it rest. Gave me a few years. I guess time just caught up to it.

Fellow outfielder Trevor Larnach joined Buxton on the injured list ahead of Friday night’s game in Anaheim with a left wrist sprain. Larnach had missed the Twins’ last four games as he dealt with the injury. The Twins recalled Alan Roden from Triple-A to take his spot on the roster.
