Last season, Alabama baseball did something this program hadn’t done in 27 years: make it to the College World Series. However, the trip to Omaha didn’t go as planned, going 0-2 and getting outscored 23-2. Now, the 2027 team has bigger aspirations.
“I think all of us kind of left with a little bit of a sour taste in our mouth because we didn’t play our best baseball there,” head coach Rob Vaughn said. “And so I think that makes you hungry to get back to work and have a good off-season and go kick that door down again.”
For Alabama, the path back to Omaha starts with maintaining the standard that got the program there in the first place.
Vaughn said the team has spent the first few weeks of the fall focusing on individual development before bringing the entire group together for practice. Now, the focus shifts toward building the type of team that can make another postseason run.
“The standard’s the standard,” Vaughn said. “And last year it got us to Omaha, which is great.”
That standard starts with how the Crimson Tide approaches each day. Left-handed pitcher Matthew Heiberger said the team isn’t looking to simply coast through the regular season before turning things on in May.
“You want to lead up to the back end season playing your best baseball, but here we like to win,” Heiberger said. “We like to hold ourselves to a standard. I think we’d like to play to win every single game.”
The Crimson Tide now knows what it feels like to reach the College World Series. After going 0-2 in Omaha last season, the goal is to use that experience as motivation rather than simply being satisfied with making it there.
“Very hungry, I would say,” Heiberger said. “It was awesome to kick the door down to get back there. But you always had that tight, hungry feeling of us not even winning a game there. We wanna get back and actually show that we can win and accomplish that.”
Alabama has five months to prepare for another run at Omaha. For Vaughn and his players, the goal is clear: get back to the stage they reached last season and make the most of the opportunity this time.
