Diamondbacks go 5-1, Phillies go 1-5 or worse

It’s not a phrase that’s often uttered, but it’s true: the Arizona Diamondbacks‘ playoff hopes hinge on their upcoming series against the bottom-feeding Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Over the weekend, the Diamondbacks pulled off two comeback victories against the New York Yankees — one in dramatic walk-off fashion, with Arizona’s 2001 World Series team in attendance. As such, they clinched a winning record and staved off elimination for one more series.
But there are only six games left on the regular-season schedule. That begins Monday with a three-game set against the Rockies, in a tough mile-high environment.

Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman sustained multiple facial fractures after being struck by a foul ball on Sunday, but he will not undergo surgery and could return for the postseason, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Monday. The team has not confirmed the news.
Giants put Eldridge on concussion list after accident at hotel [ESPN]
Bryce Eldridge‘s strong rookie season for the San Francisco Giantsappears to have ended after the Giants put the first baseman/designated hitter on the seven-day concussion list Monday.
The move is retroactive to Sept. 18, which means Eldridge could play in the Giants’ final three games against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend. But San Francisco manager Tony Vitello said he doesn’t anticipate Eldridge playing again in 2026.
Eldridge, 21, sustained a head injury in an accident at the team hotel in Los Angeles on Friday. He is hitting .269 with 17 home runs and 57 RBIs in 386 at-bats. He made his season debut May 4.

With one week to go in the regular season, the playoff field is nearly set in the National League, though it’s anything but settled in the American League, with two of the three division leaders — two different ones since I last checked in — ahead by just one game and those races spilling over into the battle for the third and final Wild Card spot. We’re not going to get any tiebreaker games due to the fun police and the playoff format change put into effect by the 2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement, but it’s entirely possible a playoff spot — and perhaps even a division title — will be decided on the basis of MLB’s tiebreaker procedures.
Blue Jays Designate Joe Mantiply For Assignment by Steve Adams [MLB Trade Rumors]
Mantiply, 35, has spent the entire season with the Jays organization. He originally signed a minor league deal with Toronto last summer and, after becoming a minor league free agent at season’s end, returned to the Blue Jays on a second minor league pact. Toronto added him to the 40-man roster back on April 5.
Despite being selected to the majors early in the season, Mantiply has pitched only 27 innings with the big league club. He spent months on the injured list after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in late May.
