In addition to Redbank Valley’s baseball win, three other District 9 teams advanced to the second round, or quarterfinals, of the PIAA baseball and softball playoffs.
The other baseball team was D9 Class 1A runner-up Clarion which edged WPIAL champion Serra Catholic 3-2 while in softball D9 Class 1A champion DuBois Central Catholic walked off District 6 runner-up Juniata Valley 4-3, D9 Class 2A champion Cranberry lost and D9 Class 3A champion St. Marys beat WPIAL champion Mohawk 4-2.
While Thursday’s quarterfinal schedule has Redbank Valley squaring off against WPIAL champion Freedom in Slippery Rock at 11 a.m., Clarion faces WPIAL fourth-place finisher Greensburg Central Catholic in Thursday’s second game at Slippery Rock starting at 2 p.m.
In softball, St. Marys plays District 6 champion Bald Eagle Area at DuBois’ Heindl Field at 3 p.m. and DuBois Central Catholic plays WPIAL champion Union-New Castle also at Slippery Rock at 2 p.m.
Thursday’s winners advance to next Monday’s semifinal round.

BASEBALL
Class 2A:

In a wild affair in extra innings at Stern Field, the D9 champion Bulldogs walked off the D10 runners-up on a dropped ball forceout play at the plate with one out in the bottom of the 12th inning.
The Bulldogs (15-7) were able to tie the Trojans twice down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh and 11th innings because of throwing errors on ground balls.
Braylon Wagner and Carson Gould combined to go 8-for-12 with seven runs scored. Gould ripped a two-run homer in the first inning, the first of his career.
Class 1A:

At Norwin High School, the WPIAL champions have had problems with D9 runners-up recently. Redbank Valley ousted the unbeaten Eagles in the Class 2A state opener in 2022 and now the Bobcats did it to them.
Brothers Smail, senior Derek and sophomore Dylan, combined on a five-hitter as the Bobcats, down 2-0, got a three-run homer from Derek in the top of the sixth for all the runs they needed. The only other Bobcats hit was a Hayden Weber single.

At DuBois’ Stern Field, NCAA Division I Lipscomb recruit Noah Emswiler not only tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts and three walks in 96 pitches, he also ripped a three-run homer in the top of the third inning.
Carter Himes started and took the loss for the Cardinals (18-4), striking out seven and walking one with six hits in four innings.
Class 3A:

At Showers Field in DuBois, the WPIAL runner-up, down a run, rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh and getting a tie-breaking two-run homer with one out from Cy Herchelroath.
The Chucks (17-5) had Nevin Day pitch the first six innings and brought in Parker Stahlman in the seventh, but E-F rallied off the junior lefty to get the win.
Class 5A:
Bethel Park 15,
DuBois 1
At Showers Field, the Beavers trailed 2-1 going into the fourth before the WPIAL third-place team scored 13 runs and went on to win via the 10-Run Rule in five innings.
Noah Farrell pitched into the fourth and got one out before Bethel Park knocked him out of the game and it took three more pitchers to get out of the inning.
The Beavers’ season ended at 14-8.
SOFTBALL
Class 1A:

Juniata Valley 3
At Heindl Field, the D6 runners-up tied the game in the top of the seventh on Riley Mease’s two-out double, but the host Lady Cardinals (18-4) put three straight runners on base after one out to walk off the Hornets.
Kiki Foster doubled, moved to third on a dropped infield popout and scored on a Lily Sachs forceout grounder to shortstop.
Class 2A:

At Chestnut Ridge High School, the visiting Lady Bulldogs, in their first-ever trip to the tate playoffs, managed one hit off pitcher Britni Motter who struck out 17 and walked one.
The lone hit for the Lady Bulldogs (14-8) was Braylee Yeany’s leadoff bunt single in the fifth.
Class 2A:
Chartiers-Hous. 5,
Cranberry 2
At Seneca on their home field, the KSAC and D9 champion Berries led 2-0 going into the seventh before the WPIAL runner-up’s first five runners reached base, capped by Ella Richey’s grand slam homer to set the final score.
The Berries’ season ended at 18-5.
Class 3A:

At Mohawk High School in New Castle, the Lady Dutch (18-3) had pitcher Avery Eckels scatter nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Sophia Surra singled twice and Kelsie Fledderman doubled as the Lady Dutch took advantage of five Mohawk errors that led to all four St. Marys runs being unearned.
Class 4A: Hampton 1, Punxsutawney 0
The host Talbots ended a scoreless struggle when No. 9 hitter Ashley Schick homered with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to win it. It was the Talbots’ second hit off Lady Chucks pitcher Makenna Gula, who walked four and struck out five.
The Lady Chucks (10-6) managed five hits off Hampton starter Marissa Snyder, who struck out seven and walked two while giving up five hits. Ava Snyder had two hits with a double.
