When Kirby Yates signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the offseason, his absence left a big hole in the Texas Rangers bullpen. Who will manager Bruce Bochy turn to when the game is on the line in the ninth inning?

The Rangers revamped their bullpen in the offseason acquiring left-handed pitchers Hoby Milner and Robert Garcia and right-handed pitchers Shawn Armstrong, Chris Martin, Jacob Webb, Luke Jackson and most recently Hunter Strickland.

Of those names only two, Jackson and Strickland, have had seasons with double-digit saves in the major leagues and both only had one such season apiece.

Jackson is heading into his 10th MLB season after being drafted by the Rangers in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft and spent parts of last year with the San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves.

Bochy explained how the Rangers would operate at the closer position this season saying they planned to work by committee.

“Right now I’d say we’re not gonna have a defined closer, but we have some guys that we think we can get the matchups that we want,” Bochy said. “That’s part of our job.”

Here are the Rangers’ top options at closer for the upcoming season.

Robert Garcia

Acquired in a trade that sent Nathaniel Lowe to the Washington Nationals, Garcia was slowed by an oblique injury that has limited his start to spring training.

Garcia is 5-8 in two seasons with a 4.03 ERA and 108 strikeouts to 28 walks. Last season Garcia played in 72 games, the fifth-most in the MLB by a left-hander while also finishing a career-high nine games.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Garcia would be one of the players in the mix to finish games for the Rangers earlier in spring training.

Chris Martin

Martin is a Texas native who attended Arlington High School and previously played parts of two seasons with the Rangers beginning in 2018.

Last season, Martin played for the Boston Red Sox, going 3-1 with a 3.45 ERA in 45 appearances.

While Martin has never had a season with more than 10 saves, he has had a save every year since the 2019 season, and Bochy was complimentary when asked about what he brings to the bullpen.

“Strike thrower attacks the hitters well, that his strength with good stuff. Thought he had a good outing facing live hitters a couple of days ago,” Bochy said. “He’s had a ton of success in high-leverage situations. He’s one of our guys that will be helping us get the last few outs.”

Marc Church

He is one of the top prospects in the organization, ranked 23rd overall by MLB Pipeline. Church was drafted in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of North Carolina A&T University.

Church made his MLB debut for the team last season and has stood out for the team in spring training and has only given up runs in two of his seven relief appearances. Overall he has given up four runs off four hits in seven innings of work with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

According to Bochy, Church is in the mix to make the opening day roster last season and this spring training has been one of the young players that has stood out the most.

Jacob Webb

Coming off one of the best seasons of his career, Webb set a career-high in appearances and innings pitched on his way to a 2-5 record with a 3.02 ERA with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Rangers signed Webb to a one-year deal during the offseason.

Hoby Milner

Another player mentioned by Bochy as an option to finish off games, Milner finished a career-high 11 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last season while going 5-1 with a 4.73 ERA.

A Dallas native, Milner attended Robert L. Paschal High School before playing college baseball at Texas and being drafted in the seventh round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Milner has struggled during spring training giving up seven runs off 10 hits in his first hree innings, but Bochy previously said he would not overvalue performances in spring training.
