Virginia Tech, John Szefc agree to contract extension

  • September 30, 2026

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech baseball coach John Szefc has agreed to a contract extension through the 2030 season after leading the Hokies back to the NCAA Tournament in 2026.

Virginia Tech announced the extension Wednesday.

Szefc has a .558 winning percentage in nine seasons at Virginia Tech, where he has compiled 253 of his 645 career victories as a head coach. Since 2022, he has led the Hokies to five consecutive 30-win seasons and an average of 33.6 victories per season, the second-best five-year average in program history since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2005.

The Hokies have reached an NCAA Regional twice during that span, including this year’s postseason appearance.

“Since arriving at Virginia Tech, I have been impressed by Coach Szefc, the culture he has built and his vision for our baseball program,” Virginia Tech athletic director Brian White said. “Our postseason run in 2026 provided another glimpse of what Virginia Tech baseball is capable of, but our aspirations extend well beyond that.”

Szefc, who was named ACC Coach of the Year and ABCA/ATEC Atlantic Regional Coach of the Year in 2022, has guided Virginia Tech to some of the highest points in program history.

In 2022, the Hokies won their first ACC championship, earned a No. 4 national seed in the NCAA Tournament and won the Blacksburg Regional. Virginia Tech also won 45 games, the fourth-highest single-season total in school history, and reached No. 2 in the D1Baseball national rankings.

Szefc has also emphasized player development. Thirty-three Virginia Tech players have been selected 34 times in the MLB draft during his tenure, including 16 players selected within the first 10 rounds.

Outfielder Gavin Cross became the highest-drafted player in program history when the Kansas City Royals selected him ninth overall in 2022.

From 2021 through 2026, Virginia Tech produced at least four MLB draft picks in six consecutive classes, the longest such run under a Hokies head coach.

Szefc also has coached 13 players to a combined 17 All-ACC selections, including six first-team honors. Six Hokies have earned All-America recognition, while five have been named Freshman All-Americans.

In 2026, Virginia Tech earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. The Hokies also recorded their first no-hitter since 2000, while infielder Ethan Ball earned Freshman All-America honors and pitcher Brett Renfrow received his third consecutive All-ACC selection.

” I want to thank Brian White and President Sands for their belief in our coaching staff and me as far as leading the Virginia Tech baseball program into the future,” Szefc said. “We are really excited about what we have been able to solidify and put in place thus far.

“We are obviously very eager to continue into the future and keep building, keep growing this program as we have in the past.”

Under Szefc, Virginia Tech’s offense has ranked among the nation’s best, including three consecutive top-15 finishes nationally in slugging percentage from 2022 through 2024. The Hokies also have recorded at least 500 strikeouts in five of the last six seasons.

White said Virginia Tech will continue to invest in the program.

“We’re committed to generating the resources necessary to support John’s vision and position this program to compete for championships,” White said. “I have tremendous confidence in his leadership and believe the future of Virginia Tech baseball is incredibly bright.”

Szefc has worked with associate head coach Kurt Elbin since 2017 and assistant coach Tyler Hanson since 2018. Pitching coach Doug Willey joined the staff in 2025, while director of hitting development Tyson Petersheim has been with the program since 2020.

Virginia Tech also added director of pitching performance Josh Reynolds, general manager Rich Witten and volunteer assistant coach Gehrig Ebel, a former Hokies catcher, this offseason.
