The Boston Red Sox might not have played well against the New York Yankees, getting swept in the Wild Card round by their biggest rival, but the series still made some history.
Whenever the Yankees and Red Sox play, especially in a playoff setting, it’s typically action-packed, and fans watch from all over the world.
The Yankees and Red Sox are such big rivals because both organizations have strong teams year in and year out and are also massive brands.
According to the latest report, Game 1 between the two squads actually set some records, making it the most-watched opener of an MLB Wild Card or Division Series since 2006.
“Tuesday’s Game 1 averaged 7.3 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, making it the most-watched opener of an MLB Wild Card or Division Series since 2006, according to Front Office Sports. The rivalry gave NBC Sports a strong start in its return to postseason baseball,” Chris Spiering wrote.
Baseball continues to rise at a rapid rate, a very promising sign considering the potential lockout this offseason.
That’s something owners don’t seem to be considering right now, and it has to change.
For baseball to keep growing, a lockout right when the game is growing at this level would be very questionable. Not to say that the Red Sox and Yankees aren’t a big reason for that, but baseball has also seen some upticks in other viewership numbers, and possibly ruining that would be a very bad sign.
