Mookie Betts finally chose between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two franchises he has played for so far in his illustrious career. He has won the World Series with both. He won the 2018 World Series with the Red Sox, and won the 2020, 2024, and 2025 editions with the Dodgers.

Before the Dodgers’ divisional round against the Atlanta Braves, Betts made it clear which team he will pick when somebody asks him, “Who did you play with?”

“Going through the losses, going through all the ups and downs is why we are where we are today,” Betts said. “When I’m done playing, I’ll remember Boston, of course. But what I’ll really remember is if somebody said, ‘Oh, you played baseball, like who did you play with?’ These are the guys I’m going to say I played with. That’s my team.”

This remark by Betts left many Red Sox fans heartbroken, who were already saddened by the team’s elimination in the AL Wild Card series against the New York Yankees.

“This is the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever read, bro, oh my god,” one fan wrote.

“God, I will never forgive Sox for trading him,” one fan added.

Mookie Betts’ Tenure With Red Sox Ended With Bizarre Dodgers Trade

Mookie Betts spent six seasons with Boston and won the 2018 AL MVP and World Series with the Red Sox. He hit .301 with 139 home runs and 470 RBI in 794 games for them.

Despite the notable contributions, the Red Sox made a shocking move when they originally agreed to a three-team blockbuster involving the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins in early February 2020. Boston was supposed to receive Dodgers prospect Alex Verdugo and Twins pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol, while Minnesota would receive Kenta Maeda and the Dodgers would get Betts and David Price.

However, the trade nearly fell apart because Boston was concerned about Graterol’s medical history, including his previous Tommy John surgery and shoulder issues.

As a result, the trade was restructured, but the Dodgers still acquired Betts and Price on different terms.

Betts went on to sign a 12-year, $365 million extension that runs through 2032. He has already been part of three World Series wins and will be looking to add another this postseason.
