Great American Ballpark sees lowest attendance in 4 years as Reds struggle to maintain on-field momentum

A new report indicates that the Reds experienced a four-year low in attendance at Great American Ballpark this season.

The numbers, which were published this week after the conclusion of the 2026 regular season, show that the Reds averaged 24,588 fans per game during their 81 home appearances in Cincinnati this year.

This is just shy of a total of 2 million people, and a decline from the team’s recent high of 26,967 fans per game, which was set last year as the Reds went on to earn a postseason berth for the first time in a full-length season since 2013.

However, the team finished with a meager 75-87 record last week, causing the Reds to finish last in the National League Central Division in what has been widely condemned by fans as a massive step backwards for one of Major League Baseball’s longest-struggling franchises.

The attendance numbers appear to reflect this decline: The last time that the Reds had fewer fans in attendance per game was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022. Although despite this year’s lackluster attendance numbers, the Reds still managed to draw in more fans this summer than at any point throughout all of the late 2010s, when the Reds similarly struggled to maintain the large degree of fan interest that was gained during their 2010 to 2013 postseason runs.

Among all 30 MLB teams, the Reds ranked 21st in average regular-season home attendance this season. However, Cincinnati is also one of the league’s smallest metropolitan areas, with the team still managing to beat out franchises based in larger cities such as Miami, Washington, DC, and Chicago for average attendance.

Leading the MLB in attendance this season were the Los Angeles Dodgers at 49,805 fans per game, a record that the defending World Series champions have long maintained at Dodger Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Athletics were last in the MLB at 9,867 fans per game. This comes as the team is currently housed at a temporary stadium in West Sacramento as the Athletics prepare to move soon to their new planned home in Las Vegas prior the start of the 2028 baseball season.

The MLB postseason currently remains underway, with the second round throwing out its first pitch over this past weekend.
