The Atlanta Braves might not be expected to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Derek Jeter has to know they still expect to.
After losing Game 1 of their National League Division Series in Los Angeles on Saturday, the Braves stole home-field advantage by winning Game 2 Sunday night. All of a sudden, the idea of Atlanta knocking off the two-time defending World Series champions just got real. So real that the Braves aren’t just thinking about playing spoiler; they’re thinking they might win the whole f*cking thing.
Outfielder Michael Harris II led the Braves to their Game 2 win, hitting a triple and scoring the go-ahead run. Following the win, Harris joined the Fox Sports postgame show, where Jeter asked about his mindset entering the series.
“Your mindset, your mentality, is it you guys want to play the spoiler? Or you’re just not necessarily thinking about the Dodgers?” Derek Jeter to Michael Harris II after the Braves won Game 2 against the Dodgers. https://t.co/JR1oq6u1w1

“I just want to ask this question: we’re talking about mindset, coming into the series, it seems like the whole world, all they are talking about is the Los Angeles Dodgers going for a three-peat,” Jeter noted. “And you guys sort of just seem to fly under the radar. Your mindset, your mentality, is it you guys want to play the spoiler? Or you’re just not necessarily thinking about the Dodgers? You’re just out there trying to prove to the rest of the world that you have the best team in baseball?”
What a strange and clunky question. Is Jeter really asking Harris about playing spoiler two games into the NLDS? And does Jeter really think the Braves are just here to play spoiler? “Just here to play spoiler” means the Braves can’t win a championship of their own; they’re just trying to keep the Dodgers from winning their third in a row. Which is ridiculous. Of course the Braves are thinking about winning their own title, not just playing defense to prevent the Dodgers from winning.
Maybe Jeter just doesn’t know what “playing spoiler” means because he was always going for a championship with the Yankees. But you can only imagine what Jeter would have been thinking if Mike Francesa or Chris Russo asked him about playing spoiler during any of his playoff runs with the Yankees. Although it probably would have sounded similar to the Jeterian answer Harris gave.
