The San Diego Padres got some help from the New York Mets Wednesday night but couldn’t capitalize.

The Mets beat the Dodgers 6-1 at Los Angeles, but the Padres lost 6-5 at San Francisco. Thus, the Dodgers maintained their one game lead on second-place San Diego in the National League West Division.

Pete Alonso homered twice for the Mets, a two-run home run in the first and a three-run blast in the eighth.

The surprise leaders in the respective Central Divisions, Detroit in the American League and the Chicago Cubs in the NL, continue to maintain healthy leads. Detroit leads by six games, and the Cubs are up by 4.5.

The Mets lead the NL East by 1.5 games. The New York Yankees lead the AL East, and Houston remains a half game in front of second-place Seattle in the AL West.

At press time Thursday, the Mets and Dodgers, and Padres and Giants were to conclude their respective series that day. Friday, the Dodgers and Padres will open road series, the Dodgers at St. Luis and the Padres at Milwaukee. The Los Angeles Angels will host Seattle in a series opener.
