LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — University of Louisville baseball and the city will be in the national spotlight this weekend as the team hosts an NCAA Super Regional.
Thursday was a busy day of practice for the Cardinals at Jim Patterson Stadium, as they prepare to host Miami for a best-of-three series beginning Friday at 3 p.m. on ESPN2. Game two is Saturday at 11 a.m. on ESPN. Game three will be Sunday, if necessary.Â
UofL coach Dan McDonnell and his team are excited and grateful for the support from the fans snapping up tickets.
“We have hosted a lot of regionals and super regionals and outside of maybe playing our rival here in ’17, I can’t imagine ever going that quick,” McDonnell said.
A total of 6,200 fans are expected to attend the sold-out games. If anything tells you how popular this tournament is with fans, it’s how fast tickets went. There are resale tickets still available for individual games, but full-series tickets are sold out.
UofL student Jacoby Covington said it’s a big deal, “yeah, everybody’s pretty excited about it.” He doesn’t have a ticket, but said he plans to watch the game from his rooftop. “Just to see our baseball team, which I guess doesn’t get a lot of spotlight with basketball and football here, I guess it’s pretty cool for them to do something so great.”
“I love getting to show out in front of the city of Louisville. … Kind of represent the school and the program a little bit,” said UofL outfielder Luke Moore, who leads the Cardinals and the ACC with 82 runs scored, the fourth-most in all of Division I.
The Cards haven’t been to the Super Regional since 2022, and the last time the school hosted a Super Regional was in 2019.
If UofL wins, they’ll move on to play in the College World Series in Omaha for a a sixth time.
