White Sox GM Chris Getz says adding starting pitching is a priority this offseason after the rotation threw the fewest innings in MLB in 2026.

White Sox general manager Chris Getz made it clear Wednesday that adding starting pitching is a priority this offseason after the club’s rotation logged the fewest innings of any team in Major League Baseball in 2026.

White Sox starters threw just 674.2 innings during the regular season. That ranked last among the 30 clubs and pushed manager Will Venable to lean heavily on openers and bulk relievers, especially in the postseason. Getz addressed it directly during his end-of-season Zoom with reporters.

“That is not unique to other teams,” Getz said, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. “In our case, I think it perhaps is a little bit more pressing.”

Building on a Surprise Playoff Run

The White Sox went 84-78 and reached the playoffs after three straight 100-loss seasons, then came one win short of the American League Championship Series before falling to Cleveland in ALDS Game 5. Getz praised the group’s growth and the clubhouse identity that formed under Venable, whose coaching staff is expected to return, per MLB.com. He also pointed to infrastructure upgrades, including new hires in research and development and the medical department.

Internal Rotation Options for 2027

Getz plans to look outside the organization through free agency or trade while sorting through internal options. He named Sean Burke, Noah Schultz and David Sandlin as rotation contributors for 2027. He also left the door open for relievers Grant Taylor and Hagen Smith to start eventually, saying he expects both to become starters “at some point in their careers,” though no decision has been made for next season. Taylor posted a 2.25 ERA over 84 innings out of the bullpen. Smith flashed strong strikeout stuff in limited big-league work.

Getz is also counting on healthier seasons from Luis Castillo and Davis Martin. Castillo, the centerpiece of the deadline additions, posted an 8.42 ERA in nine appearances after the trade before landing on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement. Martin dealt with right calf discomfort for much of the year and was clearly limited down the stretch.

“It was very clear that he was hindered,” Getz said of Martin. “Look forward to seeing what both of those players can do for us come spring training.”

Outfield Help and the Payroll Question

The outfield is another area of focus. Randal Grichuk and Tommy Pham are headed to free agency, and Getz said the club will look for help there. He added that the front office is already weighing in-house options and wants to be ready when free agency opens so it can “pounce when need be.”

Getz also left no doubt about first baseman Munetaka Murakami, saying, “We certainly want him to come back and be here a long time.” The club remains in extension talks with Murakami, which began in late summer.

Money is the open question. The Sox payroll ranked 24th in the majors this season, and Getz said he has not yet talked with chairman Jerry Reinsdorf about the 2027 budget. Even one mid-rotation free agent could require a bump. For now, Getz said the front office will keep evaluating what the roster needs while building on the foundation the 2026 team laid.
