The Detroit Tigers go for the series victory over the Washington Nationals at home in Game 2 on Tuesday.

The season might be over for both clubs, but the Detroit Tigers will try to defend home-field advantage and win this series against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. This is the only series of the season between these interleague foes. Detroit won comfortably in the opener on Monday, 9-2. On paper, these teams are evenly matched. The Tigers are 74-83 overall and 40-36 at home. The Nationals are 73-84 with a 36-43 away record. Washington is trying to avoid losing three in a row as they are set to miss the playoffs for the seventh straight year after winning the World Series in 2019 against the Houston Astros in a phenomenal seven-game series. That seems like a completely different era, but the Nationals already have the best record of any of those seven clubs, and this team seems on the verge of competing. It was flirting with a Wild Card spot for a big chunk of the season, powered by a strong offense. After trading away many of their marquee players, Washington might be a few offseason moves away from breaking their playoff drought. The Tigers were expected to make it back to the playoffs for their third straight season, but things never kicked into higher gear, even though they led the AL Central for a bit this season. Somehow it seems fitting that these two are playing at the end of the season after having such similar years. The Tigers are the -156 favorite to win this series on Tuesday night. They will try to do that by starting Drew Anderson. The righty is 5-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 102 innings. The Nationals will start rookie lefty Jackson Kent, who is 1-4 with a 6.40 ERA in 32.1 innings.

Detroit won easily on Monday in the opener, scoring the first nine runs to maintain a 9-2 victory. The Tigers started a rookie of their own making his first start for Detroit after coming over in the trade of ace Tarik Skubal. Ryan looked strong in three innings, allowing two hits and no runs. Keider Montero earned the win to improve to 10-9 on the season after picking up where River left off. Montero went four scoreless innings, striking five and allowing only one hit. Spencer Torkelson, Javy Baez, and Ben Malgeri hit homers to help the Tigers cruise to victory and support their strong starting pitching. It was a strong performance, especially since the Tigers were eliminated from playoff contention the day before after losing their four-game series to the Chicago White Sox. The Nationals’ only runs came off a two-run shot from Yohandy Morales in the eighth inning.
