New month, same Rockies. The Colorado Rockies lost 5-3 against the New York Mets in Queens this morning. It was a homer-heavy affair on both side, but the Mets came out on top.

The result was negative — 50 losses before 10 wins isn’t exactly something to hang your hat on — but there were some positives that came out of the game, including making it another close one for the sixth time in seven games.

Carson Palmquist (mostly) dominates

Carson Palmquist had a career start this afternoon against the formidable Mets lineup. To start the game, he struck out five of the first six batters that he faced (Juan Soto flied out to end the first inning). Things got a little busy in the third inning when Tyrone Taylor recorded the Mets’ first hit, but Palmquist still retired the next two batters to end the inning. But then the fourth is where things got really hairy the second time through the lineup.

Starling Marte walked and then stole second and Soto was hit by a pitch. Unfortunately, Pete Alonso squared up a fastball and launched it over the fence in right center field to put the Mets up 3-1. Palmquist bounced back immediately, though, striking out Brett Baty looking and getting Luis Torrens to fly out. Mark Vientos doubled, but then Taylor struck out swinging.

Palmquist pitched into the fifth inning, allowing another home run to Francisco Lindor to put the Mets up 4-3 after a short-lived Rockies’ tie. He then got Marte to fly out to right and then walked Soto before being relieved by Jake Bird.

In total, Palmquist pitched 4 2⁄3 innings, allowed four runs on four hits, and recorded eight strikeouts and two walks. He threw 89 pitches, 55 for strikes.

Chicks dig the long ball

While the Mets scored all four of their runs via the home run, the Rockies also scored their three runs via the home run as well.

Orlando Arcia got things started with a solo homer in the third — his first of the 2025 season — to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. He was signed just three days ago, and has taken no time getting settled into this lineup. He has gone 3-for-6 with the homer so far in two games against the Cubs and Mets.

After Pete Alonso rocketed his homer in the bottom of the inning, Tyler Freeman brought the Rockies back into the fight in the fifth inning. After newly-promoted first baseman Keston Hiura was hit by a pitch, Freeman launched a big fly into right center — his first of 2025 — to tie the game 3-3.

Unfortunately, these two homers were not enough as Lindor, Alonso and Soto all hit homers of their own to make the final score 5-3.

Jake Bird continues to soar

Jake Bird has had a tremendous season. He owns a 1.60 ERA in 24 appearances (33 2⁄3 innings) and has not allowed an earned run since May 17th against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did allow an unearned run on the 19th against the Philadelphia Phillies. That’s 6 1⁄3 innings without allowing a run. Only Zach Agnos has a lower ERA (1.59) in half as many innings (17), and the next-lowest is Jimmy Herget’s 3.21 in 28 innings.

Up Next

The Rockies will leave Queens for South Beach as they head to Miami to take on the Marlins. Germán Márquez (1-7, 7.13 ERA) is scheduled to pitch against Max Meyer (3-4, 4.53 ERA). First pitch is at 4:40pm MT.
