The team that was never supposed to be in the playoffs was one game away from competing for an American League pennant. But ultimately, the Chicago White Sox came up short in their five-game Division Series matchup against the Cleveland Guardians.

Chicago looked to be in a strong spot with an early 2-0 lead. But when the series shifted back to Rate Field, Cleveland turned the tides by outscoring their opponent 18-8. In Game 5, the White Sox were held scoreless and struck up 21 times in a 2-0 loss.

While their playoff hopes ended in a whimper, it was a strong sign for Chicago’s future. The White Sox had a 1.1 percent chance to make the playoffs entering the 2026 season, via FanGraphs. And yet, they took down the Houston Astros and nearly defeated the Guardians. Chicago more than outkicked their expectations.

Still, the White Sox were on the brink of seeing their miraculous journey continue. General manager Chris Getz can’t shake how the loss made him feel.

The White Sox had won the season series against the Guardians 7-6. Then, they landed a pair of early blows in the series. All the stars were pointed towards ALDS. Not advancing will always sting for Getz, via Matt Carlson of the Associated Press.

“I do need to acknowledge that there was a sting in Cleveland when we came up short,” Getz told reporters on Wednesday.

Perhaps the only thing easing that sting is Chicago’s young nucleus. It is their youth movement that catapulted the franchise into the playoffs in the first place. Getz still sees a bright future on the White Sox’s horizon.

“You know it was such a young player group and it’s not easy to break into the major leagues, let alone play in games of such high stakes,” Getz said. “It can’t get lost on you what these players went out there and did. They exceeded expectations, for themselves, certainly as a team.”

Chicago will now have some crucial decisions to make in terms of how they move forward. But coming off their playoff run, Getz knows the White Sox are ready to compete; perhaps a bit early than expected.
