The Chicago White Sox have a crucial offseason ahead of them as the franchise looks to capitalize on their playoff run. However, one key decision maker may not be apart of that journey.
Current White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield has drawn serious interest from the Houston Astros as they search for their next GM, via Chandler Rome of the Athletic. The Astros have cast a wide net in an effort to find the best leader possible.
“Longtime Milwaukee Brewers executive Matt Kleine, Chicago White Sox assistant general manager Josh Barfield, Kansas City Royals senior vice president Scott Sharp, Atlanta Braves assistant general manager Ben Sestanovich and St. Louis Cardinals assistant general manager Randy Flores are among the candidates who have drawn serious interest from the Astros, according to multiple sources,” Rome wrote.”
The Astros are hoping to find their next general manager by the end of the World Series. If that comes to fruition, the White Sox won’t have to wait long to see if Barfield is leaving the organization.
Josh Barfield gaining credibility with Chicago White Sox

Barfield joined the White Sox as their assistant general manager in 2023. Prior, he was a professional scout and eventual director of player development for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Barfield also spent four years playing MLB, appearing in 309 games across two franchises.
Prior to the White Sox’s ALDS matchup against the Astros, Barfield had a long conversation with Houston owner Jim Crane on the field, via Rome. Barfield did go to high school in Houston, so the two parties could’ve been just extending pleasantries. But with a GM role to fill, Crane is trying to carefully vet all of his options.
Chicago’s recent success should work in Barfield’s favor. The White Sox’s nucleus is filled with a number of former top prospects. With his background in scouting and role in the front office, Barfield played a role in bringing plenty of talent to the South Side.
There is heavy competition for the position. But the White Sox’s assistant general manager may soon be taking his own talents to the Astros.
