ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WWSB) – The Tampa Bay Rays return home for Game 3 of the World Series, trailing the Milwaukee Brewers two games to none.
First pitch is set for 10 hours from the broadcast. Fans gathered at Ferg’s, next to Tropicana Field, ahead of what is expected to be one of the largest watch parties across the Suncoast and Tampa Bay area. Tables were set up and beer trucks arrived outside the venue before the game.
In the first inning of Game 2, a two-run home run by Liam Hicks put the Rays up 4-0. Tampa Bay led for most of the game.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Rays leading by one, Sal Frelick hit a home run to center field, tying the game at 4-4. One base hit later, the Brewers took a 5-4 lead.
Rays looking to even World Series tonight
The Rays reached their final out with Yandy Diaz at the plate. Diaz struck out after a full count, with Aaron Ashby recording the out. A review confirmed Diaz had swung, and the strikeout stood. The Brewers won 5-4.
Rays manager Kevin Cash and second baseman Richie Palacios spoke about the team’s approach heading into the home games.
“Just continue to lock in, maybe get some luck on our side as well, and put some better approaches together, so we think we can combat scoring runs when we have guys on,” Cash said.
“We’ve lost two ballgames, not in the position we want to be in,” Palacios said. “We’ve also been in two ballgames where we’re one swing of the bat from tying it or taking the lead. It hasn’t happened. We’re waiting for that to happen. Hopefully it happens.”
Ten teams have overcome a 2-0 deficit in MLB World Series history. The last team to do so was the New York Yankees in 1996, 30 years ago, against the Atlanta Braves.
Game 3 will be played at Tropicana Field.
