Brandon Lowe was deserving of an All-star nod but did not get one. He was the Pirates’ Roberto Clemente Award nominee, but Francisco Lindor of the Mets took home the league’s honor during the World Series. After a remarkable defensive turnaround, he earned Gold Glove finalist honors but lost to the Brewers’ Brice Turang.
Lowe and Turang are now in the running for another award. The two National League Central second basemen were named Silver Slugger finalists. A case could be made for either player, and Lowe could finally get some deserving hardware for the season he had.
Lowe’s performance in his first year in Pittsburgh was one of the biggest reasons the Pirates went from the league’s worst offense in 2025 to finishing with the sixth-most runs in baseball in 2026.
Lowe led the Pirates with 35 home runs and 96 RBI to go along with a .260/.331/.493 batting line, 29 doubles, a triple, 152 hits and 94 runs scored. It was the best season by a second baseman in franchise history, and it’s no surprise to see him named a Silver Slugger finalist.
For Turang, his dream year continues. He helped lead the Brewers to their first World Series title in franchise history. In addition to winning his second Gold Glove, the 26-year-old is a National League MVP finalist.
Turang provides a ton of value with his defense but is no slouch at the plate. He slashed .268/.366/.450 with 37 doubles, three triples, 21 home runs, 100 RBI, 152 hits and 102 runs.
Lowe has the advantage in power — home runs and slugging percentage and OPS. He led all MLB second basemen in all three categories. Turang, reflective of his team’s identity, topped Lowe in many of the small-ball statistics. He led all MLB second basemen in RBI, runs and walks.
Managers and coaches decide the winners but cannot vote for players on their own teams. So what matters more to those who had a vote? Lowe’s slugging or Turang’s different style of play?
It’s an interesting debate. There really isn’t a wrong answer. If I had a vote, I would probably give it to Lowe, who finished 10th in baseball in home runs and had 14 more than Turang. But I can’t fault anyone who believes the alternative has a stronger case.
Lowe and Turang are both seeking their first Silver Slugger. One will take home the award when officials announce the winner on Nov. 17.
