With the All-Star break still a month away, the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in the thick of a competitive National League West race.

Heading into Friday’s series opener in St. Louis, Los Angeles carried a 38-25 mark, good for first place in the division but only a two-game cushion over the San Diego Padres (35-26) and three games ahead of the San Francisco Giants (35-28).
Before the game, the Dodgers made a quiet but impactful late-week move, re-signing veteran right-hander Chris Stratton and adding him to the active roster, while designating fellow righty Ryan Loutos for assignment to clear space.
Stratton, 34, had originally inked a major-league deal with Los Angeles on May 25, appeared in two relief outings (three innings, two earned runs), then was DFA’d on June 2 to make room for newly acquired Will Klein.

After clearing waivers and declining an outright assignment to Triple-A, he elected free agency, only to re-join the Dodgers the very next day.
Meanwhile, Loutos, who joined the organization via a May 1 trade with St. Louis, had tossed just two major-league appearances this season, giving up three runs in a 6-1 loss to the New York Mets on Wednesday.

Originally a first-round pick by the San Francisco Giants in 2012, Stratton debuted in the majors on May 30, 2016.
Over the ensuing nine seasons, he’s carved out a solid relief and spot-start career across six clubs: Giants, Angels, Pirates, Cardinals, Rangers, Royals and now, the Dodgers.

In 2023, he earned his first World Series ring with the Texas Rangers, contributing in both the ALCS and World Series on the way to a championship.
Over 10 seasons, he has a 41-27 record, a 4.63 ERA, 569 strikeouts and 16 saves.
