MLB.com | Bryan Hoch: The Yankees came away with the win last night, but shortstop Anthony Volpe was taken out of the game in the second inning. Volpe was hit by a Walker Buehler changeup with the bases loaded, driving in a run but continued swelling meant he was out of the game. X-rays and a CT scan both came back negative, so hopefully it’s just a sore spot and Volpe is back soon.
New York Post | Peter Botte: The Yankees–Red Sox rivalry is perhaps the ur-example of it in professional sports, and we started another round of it last night as Boston came to the Bronx. With a roster that saw major overhaul over the winter, a number of new-ish Yankees will get their first taste of the Sox-Yanks feud, with Paul Goldschmidt comparing it to his time with the Cardinals and their bitter competition with the Cubs.
New York Daily News | Peter Sblendorio: Speaking of Yankees new to the rivalry, Cody Bellinger has turned on the afterburners lately. The biggest part — shared with Max Fried — of the Yankees’ series-clinching win against the Guardians on Thursday, Belli was the worst hitter in the team’s lineup in the season’s first month. Since May 3rd, he’s posted a .957 OPS, much closer to the former-MVP form we were dreaming of in spring. Baseball’s a game of adjustments, so pitchers will do just that against Cody, but him being a solid piece behind the all-world talent of Aaron Judge goes a long way to making the lineup A-tier.
NJ.com | Randy Miller: Luke Weaver might be back before we know it. Injured Sunday, the once-and-future closer received a PRP injection in his bum left hamstring this week, before immediately playing catch on both Thursday and Friday. The initial timing of the injury was 4-6 weeks, and if Weaver’s responding this well less than a week in, there’s a real chance he’s able to beat that schedule.
