Tar Heels lose, Wildcats force Game 3

CHAPEL HILL — UNC baseball and Arizona will play a decisive Game 3 in the Chapel Hill Super Regional for a spot in the College World Series. 

The No. 5 overall seed Tar Heels lost 10-8 in a wild, back-and-forth game against the Wildcats on Saturday, June 7, at Boshamer Stadium. 

Arizona (42-20) scored six of its 10 runs in two-out situations against UNC (46-14), including a two-run single from Maddox Mihalakis in a four-run seventh inning for the go-ahead runs. The teams combined for 28 hits and 18 runs. 

The Tar Heels gave up a season-high 10 runs and 16 hits against the Wildcats, who scored in six of the first seven innings. UNC’s loss sets up a winner-take-all scenario on Sunday, June 8. A game time and TV designation have yet to be announced.

Tyson Bass hit a three-run home run with two outs to give UNC a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning. That’s the Tar Heels’ first two-out hit of the day.

Arizona has a 6-4 lead as we head to the seventh inning.

Maddox Mihalakis extended Arizona’s lead with a two-out RBI single to right field. The Wildcats have a 6-4 lead and have scored four of their six runs with two outs.

UNC got its leadoff runner on, but a double play took the steam out of the Tar Heels’ momentum in the inning. Arizona has a 5-4 lead as we head to the bottom of the sixth inning.

UNC pitcher Jason DeCaro matched his career-worst effort by allowing seven hits in 3 ⅔ innings, allowing three runs vs. Arizona. Aidan Haugh comes out of the bullpen to relieve DeCaro with runners on the corners and two outs.

Arizona No. 8 hitter Tommy Splaine hits a 385-foot home run, trimming UNC’s lead to 4-3.

Following two singles and a sacrifice bunt, Easton Breyfogle plated a run with a groundout to tie the game at 2.

UNC carries a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning after Sam Angelo’s two-run homer.

Sam Angelo entered the NCAA Tournament with two home runs through 37 games. Angelo has four home runs through six games in the NCAA Tournament.

Following two singles and Adonys Guzman’s sacrifice fly, Arizona will carry a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

The Tar Heels drew two walks out of the gate and loaded the bases with two outs, but UNC couldn’t push across any runs.
