The Saturday, June 7, resumption of the suspended game between the Diamondbacks and Reds came to an end on Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s base hit to center field off Arizona’s Ryan Thompson in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Reds won 4-3, and Thompson (1-2) took the loss.

Right-hander Ryne Nelson is set to start for the Diamondbacks in the regularly scheduled game at 1:10 p.m. MST (4:10 p.m. Eastern).

The Diamondbacks had Eugenio Suarez at third base with one out and runners at the corners with two outs in the top of the 10th, but Tim Tawa struck out swinging to end the inning.

Tawa appeared to be hit on the left hand during his at-bat, even being looked at by a trainer. But after a review, umpires did not overturn the original call of foul ball.

“You can’t argue, it’s an immediate ejection,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said.

Encarnacion-Strand’s ball was hit toward Diamondbacks center fielder Alek Thomas, who might have had a play. But the ball landed in front of Thomas and skipped under his glove for a double to end the game. Lovullo said the ball had a 70 percent catch probability rate, though that number could change.

“Maybe the ball fooled him, it was knuckling, he was reading the swing,” Lovullo said. “Swing planes and angles.

“It definitely looked like he broke one way and the ball went another…. a ball I’ve seen him catch before. One that I’m sure he will catch in the future.”

Teammates react to loss of top pitcher Burnes

Losing Corbin Burnes to what will be season-ending Tommy John surgery is difficult, Burnes’ fellow Diamondbacks pitchers said on Saturday morning, June 7, but as a group, they will have to win in his absence.

Starting pitcher Zac Gallen said he planned to reach out to Burnes to make sure his teammate is doing OK after Burnes decided that surgery was his best option. Burnes left his start June 1 with elbow pain, and five days later it was announced by manager Torey Lovullo that Burnes’ season was over.

“It’s tough, you feel for Corbin. He was off to a pretty good start this year,” Gallen said. “He’s a big part of our team. It’s not something you take lightly. The hardest part is thinking about Corbin not being able to play for 12 months or so.”

Gallen feels the Diamondbacks are still talented enough to have a successful season despite the loss of Burnes. It’s a sentiment that extends to his teammates.

“We went to the World Series with a team very similar to this,” Gallen said. “I feel like this team definitely has more talent. A little bit more maturity, too.

“Losing a guy like Corbin definitely hurts. … Buckle down and do what you gotta do to keep playing good baseball. And everybody’s going to have to pull their weight just a little bit more.”

Relief pitchers Jalen Beeks and Shelby Miller heard the news about Burnes before Friday’s game.

Beeks said he looks forward to seeing Burnes soon.

“Been around for a while, it happens,” Beeks said. “Obviously, it’s a big blow. He gives us the best chance when we’re at full strength.

“We just need to keep playing. We’re a better team with Corbin, but we’re still a good team right now.”

Beeks said arm surgeries are commonplace enough where pitchers know all about having to come back from them.

Miller said Burnes is a great teammate, and that in Ryne Nelson, the Diamondbacks have a pitcher who is capable enough to fill in.

“Nothing but feels for Corbin. No one ever wants to see their teammate or one of the best pitchers in the game go down,” Miller said. “He’ll put in the work and get back and be stronger than ever.”

Miller said Burnes led a team meeting recently when the Diamondbacks were not playing well.

“He’s everything you want in a starter,” Miller said. “We’re going to have to find a way to win without him.”

Gabriel Moreno still being evaluated

Before the resumption of the suspended game from Friday, June 6, catcher Gabriel Moreno was still being evaluated after suffering a right hand injury when a wild pitch bounced and hit his hand in the sixth inning.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Moreno is day to day after X-rays did not reveal a broken bone. Moreno arrived at Great American Ball Park with his hand wrapped up in a bandage, but he eventually took it off.

Lovullo said bench coach Jeff Banister told him that the wet surface in front of home plate changed the trajectory of the ball after it bounced in front of Moreno, otherwise it might not have hit Moreno’s exposed hand.

Suspended game resumes

The Diamondbacks-Reds game that was suspended due to rain after six innings resumed at 11:10 a.m. Arizona time, with right-hander Juan Morillo on the mound for the Diamondbacks in the top of the seventh.

Diamondbacks at Reds, 1:10 p.m., Ch. 34

Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (2-1, 3.43) vs. Reds RHP Nick Martinez (3-6, 3.89).

At Great American Ball Park: Nelson was in the starting rotation, moved out of it last week and then thrust back in when right-hander Corbin Burnes suffered an elbow injury in his start last Sunday, June 1. He’s proved to be a reliable pitcher in either situation, despite not having been able to settle into a true role. Starting pitcher is his preference, it would appear, and Nelson is set for his fourth start of the season. His past two outings have featured 10 â…” combined scoreless innings and a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 26, when he started and pitched 6 â…” innings. Nelson faces the Reds for the first time in his career. … Martinez, who spent four seasons in Japan earlier in his career, has made 12 starts for the Reds this season. He has alternated wins and losses in his past five outings, taking a loss in his last start on June 1 against the Chicago Cubs after pitching just 4 â…” innings. Prior to that, he’d gone at least six innings in his previous four starts. Martinez pitches against the Diamondbacks for the 14th time in his career, but is making just his second start.
