CLEVELAND — The struggling Guardians offense faced a difficult test against Hunter Brown and the Houston Astros following a loss Friday night. While Jose Ramirez tied it with a home run in the seventh, Cleveland eventually fell to Houston 5-3 in extra innings Saturday afternoon, June 7, at Progressive Field.
Brown has been outstanding this season to the tune of an 8-3 record and a 1.83 ERA entering Saturday, putting him in the American League Cy Young conversation. Gavin Williams (5-3, 3.79) took the mound for the Guardians.

Astros beat the Guardians in extra innings
The Guardians again set the table but couldn’t come up with the needed, breakthrough hit.
With two outs, Bo Naylor drew a walk (though pitch tracking data indicates the final pitch of the at-bat actually should have ended the game). Nevertheless, it brought up Jhonkensy Noel as the potential game-winning run, but Bennett Sousa struck him out to end it and give the Astros a 5-3 win.
Jose Ramirez is elite, but the Guardians lineup is still scratching for more offense to keep up with opposing lineups.
Astros take 2-run lead against Hunter Gaddis in 10th
The Guardians will have to overcome a 5-3 deficit in the bottom of the 10th.

With runners on second and third and two outs, Hunter Gaddis was one strike away from getting out of the inning with the score still tied, but he uncorked a wild pitch that got away from catcher Bo Naylor, giving Houston a 4-3 lead. Isaac Parades then came up with the hit that really made it all count, an RBI single to right field to make it 5-3 Astros.
Guardians, Astros headed to extra innings; Josh Hader escapes the 9th
The Guardians set the table for a walk-off win the ninth, but Josh Hader was able to work his way out of it.
With one out, Steven Kwan blooped a double down the left-field line to put the winning run in scoring position. Angel Martinez then drew a walk, forcing the Astros to pitch to Jose Ramirez.

Hader got the better of him, though, inducing a pop-out. Hader then struck out Carlos Santana to end the inning and send it to extras still tied 3-3.
Hunter Gaddis is entering for the Guardians in the 10th.

Jose Ramirez hits score-tying home run in 7th inning of Guardians-Astros
Jose Ramirez is a one-man wrecking crew.
With a runner on and two outs in the seventh, Ramirez hit a two-run, score-tying home run to right field. He got just enough of it to lift it over the wall, and it goes for his 12th homer of the season. He’s now hitting .335 with a .952 OPS.

Steven Okert saves Astros’ lead; Guardians get on the board in 6th inning
The Guardians finally broke through against Hunter Brown, but the Astros bullpen preserved Houston’s lead in the sixth.
With two on and one out, Gabriel Arias singled to left field to score Jose Ramirez to make it 3-1. Bo Naylor then drew a walk to load the bases.
That led to the Astros bringing in left-hander Steven Okert, who struck out pinch-hitter David Fry and Will Wilson to end the inning.

Yainer Diaz home run makes it 3-run lead for Astros over Guardians
Gavin Williams was one strike away from escaping the sixth inning with the Guardians still clinging to a one-run lead, but Astros catcher Yainer Diaz instead drilled a two-run home run to the aptly named Home Run Porch to push Houston’s advantage to 3-0.

The Guardians will have to find a rally somewhere within the lineup against Brown, who has looked every bit as good as his numbers have indicated all season.
Astros take lead in fifth over Gavin Williams, Guardians
The Astros won a foot race to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
With the potential go-ahead run on third and two outs, Jeremy Pena grounded a ball to first baseman Kyle Manzardo, though he had to range far to his right. Manzardo flipped the ball to Williams as he attempted to cover first, but Pena beat him to the base in a bang-bang play, putting Houston up 1-0.
Of course, in a pitcher’s duel like this, it’s a grounder to first base that gets the go-ahead run home.
