New York Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. returned to the lineup in style this week, mashing two homers and six RBI over his first four games back from an oblique injury.

All that did was earn him a spot on the bench.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone shockingly sat Chisholm for Saturday’s showdown against the rival Red Sox, one night after the All-Star slugger went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. Chisholm totaled four RBI in a 9-6 victory, the Yankees’ 11th in 15 games.
Boone instead started light-hitting utility infielder Pablo Reyes at third. Oswald Peraza drew the start at shortstop, with Anthony Volpe receiving treatment for a left elbow injury.

On the one hand, Chisholm played four consecutive games after missing over a month. However, he’s thriving at third base and looks comfortable both in the field and at the plate.

Volpe’s absence makes Chisholm’s off day even more surprising. Both players are already guaranteed some form of rest on Monday, when the Yankees are off while traveling to Kansas City.
Chisholm owns a .223 average, nine home runs, 23 RBI, and a .797 OPS in 121 at-bats. He’s already stolen nine bases through 34 games, potentially putting him in position for a second consecutive 30-steal season.
The Yankees (39-23) own a 5 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East.
