After winning each of the first two games of the series, the New York Mets are aiming to complete a series sweep against the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. In addition to being in the midst of a two-game winning streak, New York is 7-2 in their last 10 games and is four games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East lead.

Less than a year after their NLCS loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets look like legitimate contenders once again. A big reason for this is the performance of Pete Alonso, who has an opt-out option after this season.

During the Mets’ game in Colorado on Sunday, the team made a major announcement regarding Alonso.

Now in his seventh season with the Mets, Alonso continues to prove his importance to the team. Alonso’s success in New York is not just evident this year, however, as he has long been a fantastic player with the team and continues to make history, which he did on Sunday.

In the eighth inning of the Mets’ game against the Rockies, Alonso hit his 243rd career home run. With this home run, the Florida native has surpassed the Mets’ former long-time third baseman David Wright for the second-most home runs in franchise history. Only Darryl Strawberry (252 home runs) has more.

Before Sunday, Alonso was batting .296 at the plate with 15 home runs and 57 RBIs, which currently leads the MLB. As the Mets look to continue the season strong, they will keep relying on their long-time first baseman to continue his hot streak at the plate.
