The Yankees offense fought back admirably multiple times yesterday evening, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 10 runs given up by Ryan Yarbrough and Ian Hamilton. It sets up a must-watch rubber game to see who takes the first season series between these two storied rivals. The Bombers are getting back a pair of much-needed reinforcements to the left side of the infield and have a much better lefty starting on the mound than last night.

Carlos Rodón has been brilliant to start the year for the Yankees, placing among the top-ten of qualified starters in strikeout rate (31.6-percent), expected ERA (2.72) and expected FIP (3.00). His fastball command has been excellent while the slider and changeup give him an elite pair of put-away pitches. In 13 starts, Rodón is 8-3 with a 2.49 ERA (161 ERA+), 2.93 FIP, and 98 strikeouts in 79.2 innings.

Hunter Dobbins recently claimed that he’d rather retire than play for the Yankees, so it appears the Boston rookie is already fully bought into the rivalry. The Red Sox selected the Dobbins out of Texas Tech in the eighth round of the 2021 MLB Draft and he made his major-league debut on April 6th against the Cardinals. His four-seamer averages 96 and he features a diverse mix of slider, curveball, sweeper, and splitter for his secondaries. He doesn’t strike out a ton, but he’s adept at limiting walks and keeping the ball in the yard. In nine appearances (seven starts), Dobbins is 2-1 with a 4.06 ERA (103 ERA+), 3.38 FIP, and 37 strikeouts in 44.1 innings.

The Yankees lineup receives a massive boost with the returns of Jazz Chisholm Jr. from a scheduled rest day and Anthony Volpe from a sore elbow after a HBP in the series opener, the pair presenting a more formidable matchup than Oswald Peraza and Pablo Reyes. Otherwise, the Yankees make a further pair of changes to last night’s lineup, replacing Jasson Domínguez with Trent Grisham in the outfield while J.C. Escarra gives Austin Wells the day off behind the plate.

The Red Sox roll out an identical lineup to the one that scored 10 runs last night. It was the bottom of the order that got the job done, Trevor Story driving in five runs, Romy Gonzalez finishing with three hits including a two-run homer, and even the scuffling Kristian Campbell adding a pair of RBI singles.
