FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas baseball is going back to Omaha, punching its latest ticket in emphatic fashion.
The No. 3 Razorbacks (48-13) crushed No. 14 Tennessee 11-4 on Sunday to finish a sweep of the Fayetteville Super Regional and secure their 12th trip to the College World Series. SEC Pitcher of the Year Liam Doyle allowed five earned runs and only lasted 3⅔ innings, suffering his second loss to Arkansas this season.
The Hogs struck first in the top of third on a two-run homer by Charles Davalan. Justin Thomas Jr. led the inning off with a walk, and the Canadian left fielder smoked a 2-0 fastball over the wall in right field.
“I knew I was going to get a heater,” Davalan said. “I kind of sold out to be honest. So if he threw anything else, probably would have looked kind of foolish, but got a heater.”
The next Arkansas home run was a punishing blow for the Volunteers (46-19). With two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Logan Maxwell cleared the bases for the first grand slam of his career. The opposite-field blast against AJ Russell pushed the Arkansas lead to 7-1 and gave the Razorbacks some early breathing room.
Maxwell’s home run capped off an eventful fourth inning. Tennessee was one out away from escaping with zero runs allowed when a wild pitch from Doyle (10-4) moved Arkansas runners to second and third. With Davalan at the plate, Tennessee coach Tony Vitello opted for an intentional walk and removed his ace for a righty-righty matchup against Wehiwa Aloy.
That decision opened the floodgates. A wild pitch from Brayden Krenzel scored Cam Kozeal, and Krenzel proceeded to plunk Aloy. The Vols then made another pitching change, leading to Maxwell’s 13th home run of the year. Maxwell finished the day 3 for 5 with four RBIs and two runs.
“(Russell) made a good pitch and I just put the bat on the ball and competed,” Maxwell said.
Arkansas added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Kuhio Aloy delivered an RBI single, while Reese Robinett and Thomas drew bases-loaded walks. Brent Iredale capped off the scoring with a solo homer in the ninth.
On the mound, Arkansas received a short but strong start from Gage Wood. The junior righty held the Vols to one run through 3⅓ innings. Tennessee loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but Wood limited the damage by getting Andrew Fischer to ground into a double play.
Dave Van Horn turned the ball over to Cole Gibler, and the freshman lefty continued his late-season surge. Gibler struck out four and gave up one hit in 2⅔ innings.
Tennessee got a too-late, two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
The College World Series begins Friday, June 13. Arkansas will likely play its first game on Saturday, June 14, after the right side of the bracket that includes the Hogs received a Saturday-through-Monday super regional schedule. The Razorbacks will face LSU or West Virginia to open the double-elimination tournament.
“I’ve said this all year, that this is a special group,” Dave Van Horn said. “I mean, these guys have fun. They get along. They’re fun to coach. They’re fun to be around.”
