The San Diego Padres did not have a hit through five innings against the Milwaukee Brewers, but Manny Machado came through with a solo home run in the seventh that gave the Padres a 1-0 win over the Brewers at American Family Field, Sunday.
Brewers starter Freddy Peralta controlled the Padres offense throughout the contest until Tyler Wade led off the top of the sixth inning with a single to right-center field to break up the no-hit bid.
Wade advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Martin Maldonado. He ran into an out on a close play at third base after Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a ground ball to Milwaukee third baseman Caleb Durbin.
Durbin fielded the ball and rather than throw to first to try get Tatis Jr., he spun around and dived to get Wade who was sliding headfirst into the base. Wade tried to use a swim move to avoid the tag and thought he had. The play went to review and the out call was confirmed, leaving San Diego with two outs and a runner on first base. Luis Arraez grounded out to end the inning.
Padres starter Ryan Bergert was equally impressive in his outing. He held the Brewers without a run and allowed just one hit over 5 1/3 innings. Bergert recorded four strikeouts and allowed four walks. He was replaced by Yuki Matsui after back-to-back one-out walks in the sixth. Matsui struck out Christian Yelich, allowed a walk to William Contreras to load the bases, and ended the inning with a strikeout of Sal Frelick.
In the top of the seventh inning, Machado put the Padres’ offense on his shoulders and hit a solo home run to left field that put San Diego on top 1-0.
Sean Reynolds and Wandy Peralta combined to work a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning. Jason Adam followed with a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning, but ran into trouble. With two outs in the inning and runners on the corners, Adam struck out Andruw Monasterio to end the threat and the inning.
Robert Suarez came on for the Padres in the bottom of the ninth inning and recorded a strikeout of Isaac Collins and a pop out of Caleb Durbin. Joey Ortiz extended the game by one batter with a single through the left side of the infield. Suarez then induced a soft line-out to shortstop Xander Bogaerts from Brice Turang to end the game and earn his 21st save of the season.
Robert Suarez threw 13 fastballs and 4 changeups to earn his MLB-leading 21st save.
