The Pittsburgh Pirates fan who fell over a 21-foot wall in right field at PNC Park to the warning track has broken his silence a week after his harrowing incident left him with several injuries.Â
Kavan Markwood is still in the hospital recovering from a ‘broken everything’ as he put it.Â
The 21-year-old fell while celebrating a Andrew McCutchen double and delayed the April 30 game against the Chicago Cubs.Â
‘I’m all right,’ Markwood told Trib Live. ‘I can’t really sleep. I have a lot of back pain.’
‘I think when I get home I’ll just put ice on it.’Â
Markwood took his first steps since the fall on Monday and is slated to be released from a Pittsburgh hospital next week.Â

The GoFundMe to help with medical expenses has raised more than $48,000 as of Wednesday night.Â
Markwood does have back, neck, and hand injuries from the fall, with him saying he plans to speak out in greater detail when he is out of the hospital.Â
‘It’s a slow, slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits,’ said Jennifer Phillips, the mother of Markwood’s girlfriend on GoFundMe.Â
‘He still has a long way to go – he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead. But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.’Â
Markwood previously played for Walsh University and Wheeling’s Division-II college football teams. Â
