Four District 2 players — a pair from the Lackawanna League and two from the Wyoming Valley Conference — were named to participate in the inaugural Pennsylvania State Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game.

Max Forgione of Dunmore and Thomas LaCoe from Abington Heights were selected to the East rosters, which consists of schools from Districts 1, 2, 3, 11 and 12. Pittston Area’s Silvio Giardina and Hazleton Area’s Nick Ledger are also part of the East squad. And, Holy Cross coach Sandy Menichetti — who announced that this would be his 26th and final season — is one of three coaches for the East team.

It will face the West all-stars, consisting of schools from Districts 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, on June 22 at Penn State University’s Medlar Field.

Forgione helped Dunmore go 19-4 this season and capture its first District 2 championship since 1996, claiming the Class 3A crown. He batted .378 (28 for 74) with five doubles, two triple, seven home runs, 28 runs and 25 RBIs. On the mound, he was 5-3 with a 2.37 earned-run average with 43 strikeouts.

LaCoe batted .435 (27 for 62) with eight doubles, two triples, one home run, 26 runs and 21 RBIs to help Abington Heights share the Lackawanna League Division I title with North Pocono and finish as District 2 Class 5A runnerup.

Giardina was a key contributor to Pittston Area starting 22-0 and winning the District 2 Class 5A title before losing in the first round of the PIAA tournament to Palmyra. He batted .403 (31 for 77) with three doubles, eight triples, 30 runs and 22 RBIs. He also was 2-1 with a 3.11 ERA and 30 strikeouts.

Ledger batted .369 (24 for 65) with six doubles, one home run and 29 RBIs for Hazleton Area, which won another District 2 Class 6A subregional title and reached the PIAA Class 6A quarterfinals before losing to North Penn.

In addition to Menichetti, Jesse Bortner of Big Springs High School and tentatively Scott Buffington from Schuylkill Haven High School are the other members of the East coaching staff.

All senior players for the all-star game were nominated by their coaches who are members of the PSBCA, then selected by a committee of coaches.
