The Boston Red Sox are reportedly making the long-awaited move to call up top prospect Roman Anthony from Triple-A Worcester on Monday.

Anthony, who slugged a 497-foot grand slam in front of executive Craig Breslow on Sunday, will get his first chance at big league stardom in the Red Sox’ Monday matinee with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Fresh off a series win against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, news quickly emerged as to why the Sox finally called up MLB’s top prospect.
The Red Sox sent outfielder Wilyer Abreu to the injured list in a corresponding move, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, who also broke the Anthony news.

The exact injury to Abreu is unknown, but it may explain Abreu’s paltry .268 OPS in June.
Many Sox fans took the opportunity as a bittersweet one, balancing the excitement around Anthony’s highly anticipated MLB debut with the news of the unknown injury to Abreu, who finished sixth in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 2024.

Anthony will be batting fifth in his MLB debut tonight, per Rosenthal, though the Red Sox announced a different starting lineup earlier in the afternoon.
Boston also announced two additional roster moves on Monday, most notably selecting Anthony’s Triple-A teammate, pitcher Brian Van Belle, to the major league roster. They also designated right-hander Robert Stock for assignment.
