With two home runs yesterday at Coors Field, Pete Alonso moved past David Wright for second all-time in home runs as a Met. Alonso currently sits at 243, just nine behind Darryl Strawberry for the all-time Mets record.
Alonso is 30 years old, two years older that Strawberry was when he hit his 252nd home run for the Mets. Strawberry made his Mets debut at age 21 in 1982 and hit his final Mets home run in his 1106th game as a Met. For some context, yesterday was Alonso’s 912th game as a Met. Part of the discrepancy in the games can be accounted for the 2020 season having 102 fewer games than normal, but even when factoring that in, Alonso has been hitting home runs at a pace that has never been seen for a Met for this long of a period of time.
As for Wright, who posted a lovely message congratulating Alonso on his accomplishment, he hit his 242nd home run in his 1583rd game as a Met at 34 years old. Wright’s Mets career was considerably longer than Strawberry’s, but injuries slowed Wright’s power and playing time down considerably.
Alonso is off to an all-time great start this season, notching 2.9 bWAR thus far, and elevating all parts of his hitting game, not just the power department. He’s currently batting .301/.396/.594 with 17 home runs, 20 doubles, 61 RBIs, 33 walks, and a 183 OPS+.
