Welcome to Week 10 of the Yankees minor league recap! The week started out with some big news as Cam Schlittler, Carlos Lagrange, and Roc Riggio earned promotions to higher levels after strong starts to their respective seasons, and each of the three maintained their performances in their first weeks at the new levels. Here’s how the Yankees’ minor-league affiliates performed last week:
Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre RailRiders
Record: 29-31; Sixth place in International League (East), 12.5 GB
Past Week: 4-2 @ St. Paul Saints (Twins)
Coming Up: Home vs Syracuse Mets
Cam Schlittler’s promotion to the highest level of the minors was the leading story in Scranton this past week, and the RailRiders got back on track by winning a road series in St. Paul four games to two. The week began with a battle of fringe big-league arms, as J.T. Brubaker and Simeon Woods-Richardson matched up on Tuesday and each allowed five runs. Scranton hit three home runs against Woods-Richardson off the bats of Brennen Davis, Braden Shewmake, and Everson Pereira, and a dominant bullpen performance allowed them walk away with an 8-5 victory. They fell on Wednesday by a score of 7-5, as Anthony DeSclafani was ineffective and Colten Brewer allowed two late runs to put the Saints over the edge. Shewmake homered again in the loss, and Davis recorded three more hits.
Erick Leal recorded a third straight ineffective start on Thursday, allowing seven earned runs in 4.1 innings, but luckily the offense was able to put up seven runs of their own against Marco Raya and Scranton won a slugfest 11-8. Jorbit Vivas, back in Scranton following a stint in the Bronx, hit a three-run home run in the win and Jesus Rodriguez reached base four times. Allan Winans got the pitching staff back on track on Friday, striking out six over 5.2 shutout innings to lower his ERA to 0.23 on the season. Bryan De La Cruz homered, and a two-run double for Ismael Munguia helped Scranton win 5-1. Schlittler made his RailRiders debut on Saturday and looked great, striking out eight across five innings of one-run ball. The offense stalled against starter Darren McCaughan however, and Schlittler was tagged with the loss in a 4-1 defeat. The week ended on a positive note with a 7-2 win on Sunday, as Brubaker bounced back with 3.2 shutout innings and six strikeouts, and Brennen Davis carried the offense with a home run and a double. Scranton will look to get back to .500 at home against the Syracuse Mets.

Double-A Somerset Patriots
Record: 25-31; Fifth place in Eastern League (Northeast), 13 GB
Past Week: 1-5 @ Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets)
Coming Up: Home vs Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox)
Right when it seemed like Double-A Somerset was on the verge of righting the ship and making it back to .500 after a tough start to the year, they had a disastrous week in Binghamton and dropped five of six games to the Rumble Ponies. The first loss of the week came on Tuesday by a score of 7-3, as Trent Sellers and Cole Ayers gave up six runs in the first five innings of the game. On a bright note, Spencer Jones hit his tenth homer of the year and Tyler Hardman hit his ninth despite the loss.
Somerset lost 4-3 on Wednesday as Jonah Tong, one of the Mets’ top pitching prospects, fired five shutout innings and struck out 11 batters in the process. Brendan Beck pitched pretty well himself (5 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K), but was tagged with the loss anyway. A third-straight loss came on Thursday as the Patriots’ bats were stifled by another starter when Zach Thornton tossed 6.2 innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts. Tyler Hardman and Dylan Jasso homered in the loss, and a struggling George Lombard Jr. showed signs of life with an RBI triple.
Somerset’s only victory of the week came on Friday by a score of 10-4, as Carlos Lagrange made an impressive Double-A debut (6 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) and the offense exploded behind three hits from Rafael Flores and three RBI by Jasso. Roc Riggio, promoted earlier in the week alongside Lagrange, hit his first home run at the level in the win. Riggio homered again in Saturday’s game, but his two-run shot was the only offense Somerset came across and momentum was quickly stifled in a 5-2 loss. He was far from done though, hitting two more homers on Sunday in a three-hit game. Again, he was the only focal point of the Patriots offense, and they lost 7-4. Despite the miserable series, Riggio and Lagrange hitting the ground running at the new level is a great sign for the farm system. Somerset will host Portland this week and try to stop the bleeding.
Players of Note:
George Lombard Jr: 125 PA; .200/.344/.260, 0 HR, 7 RBI, 8 SB, 17.6 BB%, 25.6 K%, 92 wRC+

High-A Hudson Valley Renegades
Record: 34-22; Third Place in South Atlantic League (North), 4.5 GB
Past Week: 3-3 @ Aberdeen IronBirds (Orioles)
Coming Up: Home vs Greenville Drive (Red Sox)
The Renegades split a series in Aberdeen this past week, holding steady as they fight for the top spot in a competitive South Atlantic League. The week started with a close 3-2 defeat, as starter Kyle Carr recorded a tough-luck loss with just one earned run across six strong innings in which he struck out seven. Jose Colmenares recorded three hits including an RBI double and Parks Harber put up two hits of his own, but it wasn’t quite enough. Hudson Valley won 8-1 on Wednesday behind a strong performance from Bryce Cunningham (4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K) and two home runs and five RBI from Tomas Frick. Coby Morales homered as well as part of a three-hit performance.
The offense exploded in an 11-2 win on Thursday. Dillon Lewis homered and tripled, driving in two runs and scoring three, Frick drove in two more runs, and Alexander Vargas hit his first home run at the level. Hudson Valley won again in a 6-0 shutout on Friday behind a masterclass from Bailey Dees, who allowed just one hit in seven innings while striking out nine. Omar Martinez hit his seventh home run of the season in the win. The Renegades lost another close one 3-2 on Saturday, but the main story was Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, who tossed seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts. The offense stumbled again on Sunday in a 4-1 loss, though Griffin Herring again pitched well with just one run allowed in six innings. It was an average week in Hudson Valley, but the starting pitching at the level has held strong despite the promotion of Carlos Lagrange. A stronger offensive performance next week should put them in line to return to their winning ways.

Low-A Tampa Tarpons
Record: 31-25; Second place in Florida State League (West), 2 GB
Past Week: 5-1 @ Jupiter Hammerheads (Marlins)
Coming Up: Home vs Clearwater Threshers (Phillies)
The Tarpons have been the hottest of the Yankees’ minor-league affiliates over the past few weeks, and momentum has finally fully swing in their favor after winning five of six games in Jupiter this past week. The offense dominated all week, and they started red-hot with a 14-2 victory on Monday. Eight of the nine batters in the lineup drove in at least one run, with Marshall Toole leading the way from the 9-hole with five RBI. They kept the momentum up on Tuesday, as a seven-run sixth inning helped lead to a 9-6 victory. Toole hit his first homer of the year, but they won through small ball as each of the team’s other seven hits in the game were singles. The Tarpons won again 6-1 on Thursday behind a dominant outing from starter Gage Ziehl, who struck out six in as many innings and only allowed one run.
Another offensive explosion on Friday led to an 11-4 victory, and this time patience at the plate was the main catalyst as the Tarpons walked 15 times as a team. Hans Montero hit his fourth homer of the year in the win. Tampa won their fifth-straight game on Saturday 7-3, but this time they had some serious help from the Hammerheads defense which recorded five errors. Toole homered again in this one, and Tyler Wilson recorded a 4-for-4 game with four singles. Jupiter was able to prevent a sweep on Sunday, as a close 5-4 loss was the one blemish on the series for Tampa. Wilson had two more hits and Toole drove in two more runs, but it wasn’t quite enough to pull off the sweep. They’ll look to keep momentum alive in a home series against Clearwater.
Players of Note:
Tyler Wilson: 215 PA; .287/.372/.383, 4 HR, 28 RBI, 15 SB, 12.1 BB%, 24.7 K%, 118 wRC+
Brian Sanchez: 160 PA; .283/.363/.435, 0 HR, 23 RBI, 14 SB, 11.3 BB%, 25.0 K%, 123 wRC+
Marshall Toole: 141 PA; .316/.426/.513, 2 HR, 18 RBI, 16 SB, 15.6 BB%, 21.3 K%, 161 wRC+
FCL Yankees
Record: 14-13; Third Place in Florida Complex League (North), 2 GB
The FCL Yankees got their record to a game above .500 on the season this past week, and they now sit at 14-13. 19-year-old Brando Mayea returned from an ankle injury, and continues to be the most promising player on the roster with a 131 wRC+ in 84 PA. The two Gabriels, Terrero and Lara, have impressed in small sample sizes, with Terrero posting a 129 wRC+ and a sub-20% strikeout rate through his first 36 PA, and Lara with a .387/.441/.677 slash line through 34 PA. Mariano Salomon is off to a hot start on the mound, with a 30.6% strikeout rate and 0.68 ERA across 13.1 innings.
DSL Yankees and DSL Bombers
Records: 1-4; 2-3
The Yankee affiliates in the Dominican Summer League got off to slow starts in their first week of competition, as the Yankees went just 1-4 and the Bombers went 2-3. Richard Matic homered twice for the Bombers and has started off with a 197 wRC+, and Juan Torres is four for his first 13 for the Bombers with a home run, despite five early strikeouts. We’ll learn more about which players on these rosters are ones to watch as the season continues and sample sizes become bigger.
