BOSTON — The Rays didn’t have any late-inning comebacks in them Tuesday, falling behind the Red Sox in the first inning and losing 3-1.

After rallying to win a back-and-forth 10-8, 11-inning affair on Monday, the Rays had a quiet night at the plate the following night, rapping just three hits.

The loss dropped the Rays to 36-31 and, at least temporarily, halted the momentum from their recent hot streak, having won six of their previous seven and a majors-best 15 of 19.

The Red Sox grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first off Rays starter Ryan Pepiot.

Rafael Devers reached on a one-out single with a liner that centerfielder Jake Mangum and rightfielder Josh Lowe both pursued but seemed to expect the other to catch, and it dropped in.

With two outs, Carlos Narvaez doubled to left, and then top prospect Roman Anthony, who went 0-for-4 in his Monday debut, delivered his first big-league hit, lacing a double to the leftfield corner that scored both.

Pepiot battled to keep the Sox from scoring more in working through the fifth inning, though his defense increased the degree of difficulty at times.

His night ended with two outs in the sixth, when Trevor Story launched a 3-2 fastball — the ninth pitch of the at-bat — on a 398-foot ride over the Green Monster wall in leftfield.

The Rays didn’t do much against Sox starter Lucas Giolito, who had not been pitching well.

Their best chance came in the fifth, when a pair of walks and Jose Caballero’s baserunning, put runners on third and second with no outs, but only got one run.

Danny Jansen struck out, then Yandy Diaz lasered a 108.4-mph line drive that second baseman Kristian Campbell gloved but couldn’t handle, cutting the lead to 2-1. Brandon Lowe then flied to center.
