STERLING, Ill. — Feeling good after a big win over its cross town rivals Quincy Notre Dame on Tuesday, the Quincy Blue Devils were eager to get revenge against Western Big 6 Conference rival Sterling on Wednesday.

The Blue Devils had to wait after an hour delay, but came away with a hard-fought 4-3 win over the Warriors to split the season series.

Quincy starting pitcher Cameron Lawson earned the win after throwing five innings with one strikeout, while scattering nine hits, one walk and one earned run.

Nick Brown came in to pitch two scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts, picking up the save.

Lawson made a spectacular play to end the game with the tying run on third base.

Warriors starting pitcher Eli Penne pitched a complete game with three strikeouts, while allowing eight hits, three walks and four earned runs.

Like yesterday, The Blue Devils struck in the top of the first inning with Mason Ritter delivering a clutch, two-out single with the bases loaded that scored Kade Parkhill and Mason Dent.

Sterling added a run in the bottom of the first to narrow Quincy’s lead to one run.

However, Quincy plated a couple more runs in the third when Cam Lawson doubled home Shane Pillars and Dent singled home Parkhill.

Sterling scored one run in both the third and fifth innings, but the Blue Devils held the line.

Parkhill went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs out of the leadoff spot for Quincy.

Ritter went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Dent went 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and a run.

Sterling third baseman and leadoff hitter Drew Nettleton went 2-for-4 with a run and a stolen base, while first baseman Braden Birdsley went 1-for-3 with a walk, RBI and a run. Left fielder Adrian Monarrez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while shortstop Bryce Hartman went 2-for-4 with a run.

Up next for QHS (11-14) is a home game against Payson Seymour (9-11) at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
