The Dodgers’ bullpen game was ultimately a wash on Tuesday, as they received just one run of support while the San Diego Padres scampered home 11 times against Matt Sauer and Kiké Hernández.

Ahead of Tuesday’s defeat, Shohei Ohtani and Blake Snell both threw bullpen sessions and are making encouraging strides in their respective throwing programs. Ohtani reached up to 44 pitches across three simulated innings with his fastball touching as high as 96 miles per hour. Sonja Chen of MLB.com notes that the idea of Ohtani making his Dodgers pitching debut before the All-Star game is not outside the realm of possibility.

“It’s tempting. I’m sure Shohei feels tempted to just kind of rip the bandaid off and get into a big-league game,” Roberts said. “But I think we’re doing a good job of being patient. And truth be told, I don’t think anyone knows the right time to get him in a big-league game. We’re still being very careful, I guess.”

Snell threw his first bullpen session since April before Tuesday’s game, and was able to reach up to 15 pitches, and he is excited to have made that first step in progressing through his program, per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times.

“I’m very excited,” he said after throwing at about 70% intensity level in his 15-pitch bullpen. “After this ‘pen, the ramp up is gonna start, and I can start pitching, and I know I’m gonna be a factor on the team again.”

Glasnow was away from the team in Los Angeles on Tuesday when he threw his bullpen session, where he was touching 95-96 miles per hour on his fastball. Pitching coach Mark Prior discussed what the next step for Glasnow will be over the next seven to 10 days, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

“He really has been feeling good and the ball has been coming out really good,” Prior said. “We’re going to kind of wrap our head around on Glas and try to figure out maybe what the next seven to 10 days look like for him, too and try to see what that progression looks like.”

All incredible news to hear for a pitching staff that has just two starters from the opening day roster currently active.
