BOSTON — For the second time this season, veteran right-hander Robert Stock has cleared waivers and returned to the WooSox after being designated for assignment.
Stock was outrighted back to Triple-A on Wednesday, according to the Red Sox, just two days after the club designated him and called up righty Brian Van Belle to take his roster spot. A similar situation unfolded in April. Stock’s latest stint on the big league roster lasted two days, both coming in New York over the weekend. He allowed a two-run homer to Aaron Judge and issued three walks while recording just two outs in the ninth inning of Sunday’s 11-7 win over the Yankees before Aroldis Chapman entered in a non-save situation.
Stock has made two appearances in the majors this year and has allowed three earned runs and four hits in 2 ⅔ innings. With Worcester, the 35-year-old has posted a 3.09 ERA (19 earned runs in 55 ⅓ innings) with 63 strikeouts in 12 games (nine starts). He signed a minor league deal to join the Red Sox in January, marking his second stint with the club. He had a 4.73 ERA in 10 relief appearances for the lowly 2020 Red Sox and hadn’t appeared in the majors since 2021 before getting into a game against Toronto on April 7.
First baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda remains in DFA limbo. Stock is no longer on the 40-man roster.
