Durham Bulls 5, Charlotte Knights 1 (Statcast box)
The Knights (32-33) fell back below .500 after a slow day from the offense and a disappointing performance from the bullpen.

The Knights broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third, when Zach DeLoach set the table with a one-out single. Brooks Baldwin followed by hustling out an infield single, and DeLoach advanced to third on an error. That set Colson Montgomery up for an RBI opportunity, and he took advantage. Montgomery sliced a grounder with a 100 mph exit velocity for an RBI single to put the Knights in front.

Knights starter Yoendrys Gómez, 25, was quite effective during his 3 1⁄3 innings on the mound. Gómez scattered three singles, he only issued one walk, and he tallied five strikeouts. When Gómez left the game, the Knights still had a 1-0 lead, and he certainly did his part.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Bulls put themselves on the board. Reliever Wikelman González allowed a single, and more importantly, he issued three walks, the last of which occurred with the bases loaded. González did manage to strand the bases loaded by getting Ben Rortvedt to line out to left to preserve the 1-1 tie.

Reliever Peyton Pallette took over to begin the bottom of the seventh, and things did not go as planned. Pallette issued a leadoff walk to Coco Montes, and Brock Jones drove in the go-ahead run in with a double. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk, Bob Seymour blew the game open with a three-run blast. That made the score 5-1, and nobody scored after that.

Montgomery Biscuits 1, Birmingham Barons 0
The Barons (32-26) failed to get on the board during Wednesday’s loss to Montgomery.

Barons starter Tommy Vail, 26, did a great job of preventing the Biscuits from making sharp contact. Vail pitched 5 1⁄3 scoreless innings, and the only five hits he allowed were all singles. This was Vail’s third start since being promoted to Birmingham on May 27, and he has only allowed two runs in 15 2⁄3 innings with the Barons.

Outfielder Rikuu Nishida helped Vail out by picking up an outfield assist on a great throw to nail a runner at home.

However, the Barons offense struggled immensely, and after a strong relief appearance by Jared Kelley, the game remained scoreless entering the bottom of the eighth. Finally, the Biscuits broke the ice on a solo home run by Xavier Isaac. Reliever Andrew Dalquist, who has been terrific this season, was the one who allowed the blast. This outing increased Dalquist’s ERA from 0.94 to 1.21 in 29 2⁄3 innings this season.

Bowling Green Hot Rods 10, Winston-Salem Dash 1
The Dash (22-37) got crushed in the latter portion of this game, as the bullpen had no answers for the Bowling Green offense.

Dash starter Christian Oppor, 20, got charged with the loss, but he did not deserve it. In 3 2⁄3 innings, Oppor only allowed one run, and that run was unearned. Granted, that error was a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Oppor, but still, Oppor’s performance was solid overall.

The Hot Rods took full control in the top of the sixth against reliever Vince Vannelle. The first two Hot Rods of the inning singled, and Hunter Haas launched a three-run homer to make the score 4-0. Vannelle also walked a batter who came around to score after Manuel Veloz replaced him, so Vannelle was charged with four earned runs.

With the score 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Weston Eberly provided the only offense for Winston-Salem. Eberly’s blast was his first home run of the season.

The Dash only picked up one other hit in this game, which was a single by Braden Montgomery.

The Hot Rods continued to pull away against Veloz and Luke Bell, who combined to allow five earned runs in 2 1⁄3 innings. Reliever Carson Jacobs pitched a scoreless ninth for the Dash, but it was far too little, far too late.

Kannapolis Cannon Ballers 2, Columbia Fireflies 0
The Cannon Ballers (32-27) used an excellent pitching performance and a tremendous blast by George Wolkow to defeat Columbia.

Cannon Ballers starter Grant Umberger, 23, is officially on a tear. In his last four starts, Umberger has only allowed one run in 25 innings, striking out 29 while only issuing four walks. Overall, through 45 innings (all with Kannapolis), Umberger has a 1.80 ERA, and opposing hitters are only batting .178 against him. Tonight, Umberger delivered seven shutout innings, picking up six strikeouts along the way.

When Umberger left the game, the Cannon Ballers had a 2-0 lead. Both of those runs scored on a two-run blast by George Wolkow.

That was Wolkow’s seventh home run of the season, and Wolkow is slashing .220/.304/.360 overall. Although that slash line is unremarkable, the 19-year-old from Downers Grove is slashing .407/.484/.630 in June after a slow start to the season.

Relievers Hale Sims and Jonathan Clark each pitched a scoreless inning for the Cannon Ballers, so Kannapolis held on for the victory. Besides Wolkow’s homer, the Cannon Ballers did not score, but they did not have to.

ACL Dodgers 3, ACL White Sox 1
The ACL White Sox (14-14) scored a run in the top of the first, but they did not score again during their loss on Wednesday.

Center fielder Marcelo Alcala kicked off the game with a bang, as he launched a triple to left field. Alexander Albertus was hit by a pitch, and Grant Smith drove in Alcala with a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, after Alcala’s triple to open the game, the ACL White Sox only picked up two more hits in this game.

The pitching staff had a difficult job, and it was ultimately too much to handle. ACL White Sox starter Mathias LaCombe, 23, had a strong outing, only allowing one run on three hits in four innings. Reliever Jommy Hernández, however, had a tougher time. Hernández faced six batters, five of them reached base safely, and two of them scored.
