The Boston Red Sox are treading water in the American League standings, and with the MLB trade deadline approaching, closer Aroldis Chapman could emerge as one of the more intriguing bullpen pieces available.

While the offense remains productive, ranking sixth in the league according to FanGraphs, inconsistent pitching continues to undermine any real momentum. If the club fails to gain ground over the next few weeks, all signs point toward a sell-off, and Chapman may headline that list.

Chapman, 37, has been one of the most effective relievers this season, posting a 1.65 ERA across 30 appearances with 37 strikeouts across 27 1/3 innings.

Signed to a one-year, $10.75 million deal with Boston this offseason, Chapman has the characteristics of a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for contenders in need of a left-handed power arm. According to Newsweek’s Andrew Wright, the Chicago Cubs could be a logical suitor.

“Chapman was a member of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series team, and his addition to the backend of the bullpen would be more than welcome,” Wright noted, citing his experience and strikeout ability as key assets. “His 11 saves and 37 strikeouts across 27 1/3 innings pitched is eye-opening, and he would give the Cubs a much-needed high-velocity left-handed pitcher in the bullpen.”

Chicago, currently leading the NL Central, has experienced bullpen inconsistencies of their own. Reuniting with Chapman would not only add postseason-tested depth but also help stabilize late-inning roles.

If Boston decides to sell, Chapman’s track record makes him one of the most attractive bullpen arms available. For now, the Red Sox still have time to course-correct, but the next few weeks will determine whether they stay the course or cash in on one of their few veteran trade chips.
