Diamondbacks’ Eduardo Rodriguez on getting the win vs. Mariners

Behind Eugenio Suarez’s grand slam and 6 1/3 sharp innings from Eduardo Rodriguez, the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Seattle Mariners, 5-2.

The Diamondbacks and Padres face off in a three-game series at Chase Field starting Friday.Padres at Diamondbacks, 6:40 p.m., Apple TV+

Diamondbacks RHP Ryne Nelson (2-2, 4.60) vs. Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (3-1, 3.00).

At Chase Field, June 13: In his first outing back in the starting rotation following the injury to RHP Corbin Burnes, Nelson had a rough go, needing 39 pitches to get through the first inning and lasting only three innings in a loss to the Cincinnati Reds. He gave up seven runs on four hits and four walks. … The four walks were the most unusual part of the outing; he had issued only three walks in his previous 20⅔ innings before that. … Nelson impressed in two starts against the San Diego Padres as a rookie – he debuted against them in September 2022 – but has generally struggled when facing them ever since. In 18 innings against them last season, he logged a 5.00 ERA. He had a 9.69 ERA in three starts against them in 2023. … Kolek has had a feast-or-famine type season. He turned in scoreless outings in each of his first two starts, then gave up 14 earned runs in 16⅓ innings over his next three before turning in two more scoreless starts in his past two. … He has never faced the Diamondbacks. … He averages 94.3 mph with his fastball. He also throws a slider, cutter, change-up and sweeper.

What to know about the San Diego Padres

The Padres enter the weekend at 38-29, good for third place in the National League West and two games back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. Their pitching staff has been excellent, ranking third in the league with a 3.81 ERA. Their bullpen has a 3.14 ERA. The offense hasn’t been as productive; the Padres are tied for 10th with a 4.16 run per game average. RF Fernando Tatis Jr. got off to an incredible start but has cooled in recent weeks. Meanwhile, 3B Manny Machado has helped pick up the slack. Since May 4, he owns a .356/.413/.570 line with seven homers in 135 at-bats. Late-inning relievers RHP Robert Suarez (1.78 ERA) and RHP Jason Adam (1.59 ERA) have been big contributors in a bullpen that has a league-leading 73 percent save conversion rate. Â
