Tyler Anderson struggled on the mound as the Los Angeles Angels were defeated 6-5 by the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at Camden Yards. The Angels are now 33-36 and 18-20 on the road.
Making his 14th start of the season, Anderson allowed a season-high six earned runs on nine hits while walking two. He lasted only five innings, ultimately getting removed in the sixth after conceding back-to-back home runs to Cedric Mullins and Gary Sanchez (his first of 2025).Â
The 35-year-old southpaw headed into Saturday’s appearance having allowed three or fewer runs in 10 of 13 starts this season. However, his road struggles continued, now with 25 runs allowed in 35 2/3 innings away from Angel Stadium this year.
Before the back-to-back blasts from Mullins and Sanchez, Anderson had allowed an RBI groundout to Jordan Westburg in the first and a pair of RBI singles to Gunnar Henderson and Westburg in the third. He has now conceded eight or more hits in consecutive starts for the first time this season.
It was Mike Trout who helped the Angels get on the board early, launching a two-run shot against Tomoyuki Sugano in the top of the first that clanged off the foul pole. With the blast, he matched Johnny Bench for the 65th-most homers in MLB history at 389.Â
Los Angeles wouldn’t strike again until the fifth, when Taylor Ward’s RBI double evened the score at three. Ward had an impressive day at the dish, finishing 3-4 and reaching base four times.
Luis Rengifo had the biggest showing at the plate on Saturday for the Angels, homering twice after having just one longball all year heading into the contest. He hit a pair of solo shots in the sixth and eighth, the latter of which helped pull Los Angeles within a run of Baltimore at 6-5.Â
The third baseman, who has posted just a .547 OPS so far this season, is now hitting .333 over his last five games with six hits.Â
Following Rengifo’s eighth-inning blast, Christian Moore drew a one-out walk to reach base for the first time in his career, putting the tying run on first base. Zach Neto then stepped up and grounded into a fielder’s choice, trading places with Moore. He was thrown out trying to steal second base, ending the rally try for Los Angeles.Â
Moore was one of seven Angels’ first-round draft picks to start on Saturday, making it the second such instance for any team in the last ten years. The last time it occurred, the Baltimore Orioles used seven of their own first rounders against the Angels at Angel Stadium back in April of 2024.
Oriole’s closer Felix Bautista worked around a two-out walk to Taylor Ward in the ninth, shutting the door and securing the series victory for his squad. The Angels are now 1-4 against the Orioles this season, with one more game remaining on Sunday morning.Â
Los Angeles left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (2-5, 2.92 ERA) will make his 15th start of the season in the series finale against Baltimore left-hander Cade Povich (1-5, 5.46 ERA).Â
First pitch is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. PT.
