CLEVELAND, Ohio — It is the kind of news the struggling Guardians didn’t need to hear.
After being swept by Seattle over the weekend, the third-place Guardians have lost eight of their last 10 games to fall 9 1/2 games off the pace in the AL Central. They will open a three-game series on Tuesday night at Oracle Park against a Giants team that just got a lot better.
San Francisco, a surprising second in the NL West, acquired disgruntled slugger Rafael Devers from Boston for four players in a stunning trade on Sunday. While it’s not clear when Devers will join the Giants, he has made a career out of hitting Cleveland pitching hard.
Devers is a career .335 (54 for 161) hitter against Cleveland with 13 homers, 39 RBI and a 1.064 OPS (onbase percentage + slugging percentage). He hit .421 (8 for 19) with one homer and four RBI against the Guardians last year.
In three games in April this season, Devers hit .385 (5 for 13) with two homers, three RBI, five runs and a 1.423 OPS at Progressive Field.
The best thing that could happen to the Guardians is that Devers takes his time reporting. Players receive 72 hours to report to their new team after a trade.
The Guardians and Giants are off Monday before their series opener on Tuesday night.
In 2023 Devers was the face of the Red Sox franchise when he signed a 10-year $313.5 million deal. Things soured when the Red Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman this past offseason. The move bumped Devers from the hot corner to DH.
This season, when the Red Sox had an injury at first base, they asked Devers to play there. He balked and remained at DH.
Devers, despite the tension with the Red Sox, will join the Giants hitting .272 (74 for 272) with 15 homers, 58 RBI and a .905 OPS on the season.
