If you take a trip down to Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium this week, you may get a good look at some players you’re used to seeing in Seattle Mariners uniforms.

As pitching returns to strength, Passan ‘cannot give up’ on Mariners

Outfielder/first baseman Luke Raley is currently on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Rainiers, while outfielder Leody Taveras is also with the team after clearing waivers and accepting an assignment to Tacoma.

Both players displayed good signs over the weekend.

The 30-year-old Raley is looking to return from a right oblique strain that sidelined him in late April, and so far is 4 for 11 in three games with the Rainiers. That includes a solid 3-for-4 performance with a double and a run scored Sunday.

Raley began his rehab assignment last Thursday, going 0 for 4 as Tacoma’s designated hitter. He next played on Saturday, going 1 for 3 while manning right field for five innings. And in his strong game Sunday, he played first base for seven innings.

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said last Friday that Raley would need to play some more games with Tacoma this week before the M’s decide if he’s ready to return to the club. The Rainiers will begin a six-game home series against the Albuquerque Isotopes at 6:05 p.m. Tuesday, while the M’s are wrapping up a homestand with games Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon against the Red Sox. The Mariners will then open a 10-game road trip on Friday at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

Raley hit .243 with 22 home runs, 11 stolen bases and a .783 OPS in his first season with the Mariners in 2024. This year with Seattle, he’s hitting .206 with two homers, two steals and a .669 OPS in 24 games.

Taveras, meanwhile, has hit the ground running after being designated for assignment for the second time this year. The 26-year-old former highly-touted prospect made his Tacoma debut Friday, and has gone 7 for 12 with three RBIs, a walk and no strikeouts in three games since. That includes a 4-for-5 showing on Sunday.

The switch-hitting Taveras was claimed off waivers by the Mariners from Texas in early May, and immediately assumed Seattle’s right field position that had been hit by injuries to both Raley and opening day starter Victor Robles. He had his moments for Seattle, such as a tying RBI single in the eighth inning to help Seattle beat the Athletics in his team debut on May 7, and a late go-ahead home run in a win over the White Sox on May 21. But the M’s cut him from the active roster last week after he slashed .174/.198/.272 for a .470 OPS in 28 games for Seattle.

While Taveras is in Tacoma now, his speed (he had a career-high 23 stolen bases in 2023), glove, arm and occasional pop at the plate could make him a valuable bench piece for the M’s down the stretch.
